Hi!

 

My budgie attempted to lay an egg yesterday with no luck (the vet had to retrieve it) and now I am washing the area of all droppings that become attached to the area.

 

My question is: the area looks red and puffy still and I am wondering if the area is dropping down or if the area is just swollen still and needs time to heal. Help!! this is new to me. I have had my baby for 5 years and never had this happen.

It sounds like she may have had a partial prolapse in trying to lay her egg. That would account for what you are describing now. It should retract over the next day or so, but since you saw a vet for her treatment then the vet is the best one to alleviate your concerns right now.

She shouldnt be laying eggs at this age anyway....was it something she did on her own or is their a male and nestbox in with her ?

She is in a cage or what I like to call a "house" on her own. No male and no nestbox. Believe me when I tell you that I was not prepared for this! The vet seems content with the fact that Piper (my budgie) is active and eating and still loves her cuddle time with me.

 

What is the usual age for egg laying? The vet did use a Q-tip to push what had prolapsed back up and gave Piper an antibiotic injection.

Prolapse is more common in females over 4 years unfortunately :laughter: Eggs can be laid as early as 4-5 months ( but shouldnt be encouraged ) and after a female is 4 years and onwards they will get ideas in their heads about laying eggs all on their own.

Try to think like a nesting female to problem solve and remove any large food dishes or paper on cage floor etc so she doesnt see it all as a potential nesting site and try and lay more eggs

Thank you for your reply. I have her sitting on my shoulder...nope now head at the moment. She felt cold when I picked her up, yet the heat is on and so is the fireplace. As you can tell by reading Piper and I are very close. I want to do the right thing(s) for her.

okay, so early this morning my little Piper decided to lay another egg. This time the egg dropped on its own and she then proceeded to play with her toys. If you have any concerns perhaps then you should take her for a checkup.

Did take her to the vet and she was amazed at what a change there was. Looks like it is going to be okay. Keeping an eye on her, but like I said she is active and is eating and resting. Thank you for your advice.

Terrific news I hope she stops laying and goes back to just being a budgie

Piper is still eating and playing, but also doing a lot of resting. Her droppings are either pure water or are developing some sort of normal shape. The vet has asked me to call with updates every other day. I am still very worried and keep a close eye on her.

I'm glad Piper did better with the second egg and that the vet feels she is okay. So nice to have a vet who wants updates like that.....he/she sounds very compassionate.

 

PS...nice to see another Canadian on this forum! from the west coast.

From the West Coast also. She seems to be a very caring vet which is good, since some won't give you the time of day when it comes to a budgie. Piper has changed though. Not as loving as she used to be; especially with me! We were like glue and now she just bites, in between playing with her toys and sleeping. Droppings are still wet, but she is still eating. Even if she never wants to come to me again, I just want her to healthy and happy.

 

PS they say that girl budgies don't talk...not true..Piper says "thank you", "love you", "good girl" and knew what it meant when I would ask for a kiss.
