January 25, 201015 yr Bird netting is available from the hardware stores or stockfeed places....large enough to cover trees. You can rig it up around an aviary to be enough nuisance value to a hawk.

Probably a better reply there Thanks guys, I actually have some bird netting that i use for my vegetable garden so i will use it. I have thought about shooting it & the stupid ferral cat that keeps hanging around. The bird netting might also help keep the finches away. Lib
January 25, 201015 yr A friend around here used a rabbit trap but those hawks managed to kill a few of his birds so he thought he had every right but he was dobbed in and went to caught, so it is not wise to shoot or hurt a hawk because they are protected. even though they are allowed t kill what ever they want including pigeons.
January 25, 201015 yr Last one I had here I chased it away with my broom... and than sat outside near the aviaries for 2 hrs before it got the idea that the budgies were mine... Was a funny site to see, me running around with a broom above my head chasing a bird...
January 25, 201015 yr I had a rogue hawk here last year around October/November. It was always at my next door neighbours aviary, but it came into our patio and managed to catch the leg of one of my budgies through the cage. I shooed it away and It is now terrified of big black handbags. It has been back a few times since but as soon as I go into the patio - black bag in hand, it flies away. I have been told you can legally catch them in a cat trap, as it doesn't kill the bird. It just makes catching and removal a whole heap easier. Or... Matt's suggestion would work. But maybe a slug gun not a shotgun*** hahaha ***Please note that this is not something I do. But if I felt it absolutely necessary as a last resort would consider.***
January 25, 201015 yr What about stringing old cd's above and around the aviary. They move in the the wind and reflect light. I know it works for some birds, not sure about hawks. We also used to use the bladder of cask wine (silver thing) on top of the clothes line, or christmas tinsel.

Thanks, some good suggestions. maybe a combo of ideas would be effective. i will give it a try. My husband suggested hanging some budgie smugglers around the aviary***, could be effective. January 26, 201015 yr Try feeding it steak. My hubby gave one we had hanging around choice bits of steak for a few days and believe or not it went away. True story! :fingerscrossed:

January 27, 201015 yr Gee I can't even spell court sorry, Your dad's friend NitsuD? I think we both know who we are talking about, he got I think a $5,000 fine but he almost got a jail term What about those rotten hawks get away with murder.
January 27, 201015 yr Never had a Hawk, but had an Owl one night equally damaging. Matt's idea is the one i think would work best.
January 27, 201015 yr What type of hawk? We had crows in the chook pen so we netted them and got them out by hand. I think the experiance scared them so much that they never went near it again. Maybe if you get something they dislike and hang it up around the avairy? Netting would work too.

January 27, 201015 yr We had a Gos Hawk hang around our house as we had 2 cages outside and chickens in the yard. They are nasty horrible things. We had a Peachy Face parrot at the time who lost one of his eyes to the hawk. We had to just keep watch for the hawk and scare it away by making lots of noise. It got the idea after a couple of days and never came back. It seemed to come in the early morning the most. Goodluck, Im sure you'll be able to sort it all out. Just remember they are protected!

Just remember they are protected! My 7 year old daughter saw the hawk on the aviary and took off screaming and yelling and waving her arms around madly, that along with a full head of fluffy white curley hair was enough to scare it off yesterday, haven't seen it today. Keeping watch. The guy at the produce suggested a fake owl or old CD"S hanging from the trees might work. Lib
January 27, 201015 yr im sorry but why do you not just call the fisherys and wild life services they are their to protect and remove troublesome protected wild life such as your hawk numbers in the yellow pages even your local council would remove it ours does im pretty sure no need to kill it or frighten it its most probably got its own young in nest this time of year and looking for food why not place a few raw stakes or some brought dead snake food and hang it in an area away from your aviry for it to take it will then be fed and leave your birds alone and you could enjoy its majnesticness if thats even a word id give anything for a hawk to visit my home dayly i defently would not be frightening it away its truly a beautiful blessing your desperately trying to deture its a shame as they are fantastic birds have a heart and share your environment with this fantastic animal its only looking for a feed
