Sex Of Budgie?

Featured Replies

Darla-1.jpgI said it was a male, we had at least three others around our area say it was a male. The daughter is not so sure, so we posted the picture on here. It was taken in natural light with a digital camera, we finally managed to capture a shot where the budgie was not moving and make the picture blurred.

can you tell us the age of the bird?

I just asked my wife and she said, 4-6 months of age. We tried to place another budgie in with it, and the other budgie had a go at it, so we had to seperate them. I am guessing it is a recessive pied. Someone said to us that it was a harlequin. Oh the joy of the different varieties. We are truly thankful for this forum. It is a very big help to us.

Harlequin is an old fashioned rarely used name for a recessive pied :D

I would appreciate a better photo than the one you supplied :)

Will try a better picture, funny thing is we used the same camera on Jess and Darla, maybe it has to do where the cages are situated. Or we were trying to hard to get the cere shot of Darla, and we were just taking one of Jess cause we could not stop laughing at her after that bath. Thanks again Kaz, hope your enjoying the cooler weather if it is out there, we got a southerly yesterday, a big help in cooling both us and the birds down. :)

Darla101.jpgI hope this one is okay, the bird sits still, but as soon as a camera comes out, wham she does all she can to avoid it. Taken in natural light and a darkish background, that is a pillow behind the cage lol. Thanks everyone for your patience, I think this bird is sick of the camera now, rofl

at that age a hen is normally pale blue with white on the cere.

Can you tell us some behaviours? Does the bird sing much? and are the noises often with soft mutterings or sudden and loud?

It does alot of that screeching sound, esp when one of the hens that we have go off. But the screeching is nowhere near as frequent as our other two hens. It chews on the plastic thing containing seed. It does occasionally do the head bobbing, but any sex can do that. I do know when we tried to introduce Jessie our one hen in her age, Jessie promptly tried to attack it. As far as singing it does not really sing like our newest male does. Hope this helps any, problem with the age thing is we got it at a pet shop and they have no records of age and or lineage. It's bite is more of a nibble type. personally I was going to say male, but the daughter says a female, she wants a pair. I know the hen attacked it when placed in the cage, the same hen has been placed in with a male and did not try to have a go at the male any. So you can see my confusion, lol. I have been researching both sexes behavioiur till I am cross eyed lol. The daughter said that the cere keeps changing colour to an extant, I have looked but it looked the same to me. You mentioned pale blue with white at that age, but aren't the recessive pieds different when it comes to cere colours. Sorry about the length of this, but as you can see, I am totally baffled and told the daughter not to get her hopes up, for it might turn out to be a male. lol, maybe it will lay an egg and end this mystery mayhem.

the hens in recessive pieds are the same for any other type it is only the males the differ, as they keep the bright pink cere of a baby male.

I would say Hen from what you just told me all of that type of noises and chewing match a hen. The fact that Jessie treated this bird differently doesn't state that the bird has to be a hen, they all treat each other differently.
