February 2, 201015 yr Author I don't plan on chopping the top off as I feel that would lead to infection because it is really a big area. But will lance it again if needed. The poor girl.BUT she is looking good but has a hole red head new variety She looks as happy as. Oh the joys of breeding show budgies! A big welcome to you Splat!!!!!!! This is the pointy end of the stick, in the same position I would have done the same thing and tried to lance and clean as you did. The arguement for not breeding with your top bird is such a hard one when it really comes down to it. Do you breed the predisposition for feather cysts in a family by using her or will all be well. For me the chance of using her would outweigh the risks of doing so - THAT I guess is why we DO have the health problems in our birds that we do.It's a nice moral agruement isn't it but one I only play around the edges of particularly because I WILL try and save a really good bird.I really hope she has a full recovery splat!Thankyou Nubbly, I want to breed from her but yes the cyst thing is a worry, but she is also a top hen, yes question what do i do?
February 3, 201015 yr Why is that Matt, I have others out of the same nest and all fine used the parents with different birds..... this is the first time I have ever had anything like this. How do you know she will pass it on. That's if she recovers . I believe in Genetics . You can breed with her , but you must keep good records and pair correctly so you can breed any issues out of the birds . If it is a feather cyst then the cock bird must have all feathers and no cyst problems or occurances in its family. Just like doubling up for a good feature in a bird to strengthen it in a line , the same goes for problem birds if you double up ,all the offspring are going to inheret the bad genes . All birds are different , her brothers and sisters may be fine but she may have inhereted the weaker gene pool. Only my opinion .
February 3, 201015 yr Author You are probably right but it must be back 4 generation or more because it is the very first cyst I have had and nearly all my birds are related in one way or another.
February 3, 201015 yr What about the incidence of injury causing a feather cyst Matt ? Seems a seed found its way in and caused this mess for this particular hen.
February 3, 201015 yr Author But I will be keeping a close eye on her and her siblings and recording such incendents
February 3, 201015 yr But I will be keeping a close eye on her and her siblings and recording such incendents Hi all, Have been following this and I'm with Kaz. If this particular cyst was caused from a seed it shouldn't be "in the gene's" should it? I think I'd risk breeding from her if she comes good. If it was a seed it would be like getting a festering sore from a thorn e.g.? Shame not to breed if she's a good bird. Just my opinion.
February 3, 201015 yr Author Well if she recovers and she is looking good I will try her and see what happens as I said before there was something like a seed at the start of the cyst so it could be what of started it off. Maybe not your usual feather cyst well it did not behave like one anyway and on the side of the eye is probably very unusal.

Looking back at first picture she looks like she has pin feathers coming "ingrownFeather" maybe? Can birds get that, like ingrown hair in us?
February 4, 201015 yr Author Yes That is what a feather cyst is, an ingrown feather ( well at least that is my understanding) Edited February 4, 201015 yr by splat
February 10, 201015 yr Author She is really good Kaz, I don't think the swelling will ever go away but it much smaller than it was and it just looks like air in it now not filled with blood. She is now on no medications at all. I took all my birds off the doxy as some were having side affects to it so I guess that didn't need it. they were starting to look depressed and some had starting to have the loose droppings so I cut it out. The hen had it for 21days and the flock only 14 days but the are all much chirper now. droppings all look normal and they had a few days of probotic. All getting wormed today including the girl above.

February 15, 201015 yr Author Thanks Robyn, she is good but the swelling is there to stay, it is half the size and she will never be the same again but there is no blood in it now, She is looking comfortable. I still have her isolated. But she is on no medication any more and doing great.

February 17, 201015 yr Author I was preparing her for show when all this happened BUT she will never show again and as for breeding, still thinking about that. :grouphug:
February 18, 201015 yr It's a shame you can't show her Splat, but why not try for some equally good offspring? If it was not a genetic problem with her eye, she might hatch out some winners.
February 18, 201015 yr thats a good choice splat good luck put your best ever cock to her mate make it really worth it
February 18, 201015 yr Go to put her down soon. Love to get some winners from her. Just in case anyone reads this the wrong way...................putting her down doesnt mean euthenasia, it means breeding with her :star: Edited February 18, 201015 yr by KAZ
