Eye Infection

Featured Replies

Posted

My best hen has a very bad eye infection, the vet put her on doxy because it's a broadspectrum antibiotic but it doesn't seem to be working very fast because since I stopped using the antibiotic eye cream I think it is worse but he said to use the doxy not the eye cream.

This is what she looks like has anyone else had anything like it.

It is not as red anymore but still very swollen it looks like it is full of fluid.

That looks like it has gone a little too far. I would question the vets suggested method of treatment and take her back for a better look if you can. Failing that get some advice from seasoned show breeders near you who may have exerienced similar issues.

Poor hen must be feeling very lousy. :)

Oooo it gives me the heebie-jeebies just to look at it. ;) I can't even see what area is affected or whether she still has an eye under that. :) Are you still thinking Ionic Silver as a possible treatment or do you think it is too bad for that? :) How long has this been going on? Did it flare up from one day to another or was there a steady digression?

I SECOND that. :)

Her eye is fine clear as a whistle, the infection is on the side of the eye, I was using chlorsig but he said to put her sraight onton the doxy which surprised me too but it is a broadsprectrum antibiotic should clear it up , likely mmmm, but it is not red like the photo I took that 2 days ago.

She had a sore eye about 2 weeks ago and I did the boiled water and chlorisig and it looked like it cleared up after a few days so I put her back in the aviary because she looked all better and then last Monday I found her like this but eye was completley closed so back to the boiled water and chlorisig and the vets straight away.

I would use both treatments now both the ointment and the antibiotic, remember the antibiotic is in very small doses for budgies and therefore takes a long time to work, hence the 45 day tratment for Psitacosis.

okay thanks CW a because I thought I was getting better results with the cream. I want to to the vets tomorrow but my car has sprung a leak and the water is dripping out fast even when not driving it so it needs to go the garage tomorrow to get fixed because I need badly.

The vet is only there on Mondays too so I will have to see how long the car takes to get fixed and they may not even have the parts and then it a public holiday Tuesday. :)

But I will go out and do the crean right night.

that does look nasty splat i can see her eye is clear in picture myself and this is just me

i would get a very sterile doctors blade and if it was liquard bubble which looks like it is i would splice it very lightly and let it bleed the liquard out and then i would flush it with a solution made up of boiled warm water a tabble spoon to one drop of benideen liquard id bath it with that dayly morn and night for two days if the bubble flared up again i would then class it as very serious and vet s to get it removed it looks like a spider bite to me or a sty

thats what i would do looking at it

my idea with birds is what would you do if it was your child  and you were in bush with no doc for miles as it seems to be a blister type thing well i would burst blister of my own or childs and bath it with salt water or better if on hand watered down benadeen :)

good luck

i dont see docy fixing it truly but im not a vet

How is your hen doing today?

Did you take Gbs advice and pop it?

What does the vet say?

Hope she is improving. It will take time but you will do the very best for her.

No I haven't done it but I will tomorrow as it is not much better and it does look like a big blister full of guck like blood and fluid.

Doxy doesn't seem to be helping and make her droppings runny , so means she doesn't need doxy and I read somewhere if you give them doxy when not needed they could become infertile AND I don't want that.

Get a second opinion when your car is okay. I don't know about treatments but I know when I get a blister it pops on its own eventually. Maybe you should go with GB's advice.

hay my advice is my own thoughts

I AM NOT A VET AND I HAVE NOT SEEN YOUR BIRD IN PERSON

but in saying that i stand by what i say i would with a sterile syringe (from a hospital chemist or where ever but brand new out the pack) with the needle part pop so that the liquard leeches out same as a feather cyst splat just a fine **** dont squeeze it though like you would a cyst

then bath the popped blister with warm water with a drop of Bernadene

i would hate for you to lose a bird as everyone says listen to gb

so splat are their other breeders around your house you could ring to come out take a look at her

as i would do that first

other wize if was me but im different to most breeders

id just pop it and treat it like it was a human thats what i mostly do with all animals i come across most live but some do not ...go with your gut i always do

CW had a look and said to get the antibiotics into her which is what I have been doing, don't rush into lancing. The vet is only there on Mondays (avian Vet) car was in the garage for a few days only got it back late today, so couldn't take her but he said to keep up the antibiotics.

I actually sent a email with a photo of her eye to Rob Marshell to see what he says, only did itday and I think they are closed on Wednesday, so am waiting to here.

Bring her to my place and we'll have a close look it may be as simple as an infected feather folicle. clearwing

thats a good idea i think as i think you may be right with that why i said id pop it if was my bird but would prefer someone with more knowledge take look or suggest a way to go with it

B) my ways all good in words but as i said i have not seen bird in person

thats very nice of you clearwing :)

This could be a sinusitis! Very painful for the bird!

If the antibiotic doesn't help at all, maybe you should try another one?

Maybe the Vet can do a smear test?

All the best,

Sandra

Give the antibiotics a chance to work , it doesnt happen over night.

Birds with sore eyes always worry me, as they are a first sign of some other disease going on.

Isolate the bird if you havent already.

She is isolate and I have been watching her and hse is rubbing it the cage, I it is giving her grief and the rubbing is making it worse.

I have checked her dropping nothing sinister in then at all .

Agree, I have had one very similar (bred from a pair acquired from Heathrow!). Sent it to the vet, had its sinuses washed, was on the mend, then just died.

Apparently the infection pushes out through the eye socket.

Stick with the antibiotics. Good luck.

Thanks PT made all sad now, so should I take her to the vet and have her sinuses flushed.

CW and lanced it today and it was full of blood but it only went down a bit but she does look more comfortable but it will probably fill up again.

She is looking perfectly healthy except the eye but her eye itself is cyrstal clear, it's just the swelling beside her eye.

Hi Splat,

I would just monitor her and stick with the antibiotics. I things don't change, take her to the vet on Monday.

Cheers

PT

Well let's try and find the silver lining in all of this B) Right now it doesn't look too good BUT you have been giving her doxy as the vet instructed to combat any underlining illness. ;) You have Clearwing at hand to give you good advice. :) And you have experience in looking after birds and you will absolutely do what is best for your beautiful hen. :D

it wont matter if not much came out what matters is did you clean wound with watered down benadeene
