Baby Budgie In Bird Shop

Featured Replies

Last week we called in at a very well known bird place in Belmont in W.A. ( wont mention exact name of store ) s we were in the area. In the baby budgie cage was a budgie with obvious beak and feather. It had only body feathers and flights and tail were missing. I have enough experience of these things to recognise the issues. The budgie was in with the babies. I talked to a shop staff member and advised he had a high risk infected bird in with the other babies.......said it should be removed and also culled.

His response was.....Its a baby budgie isnt it ? He didnt care and made no moves to remove the budgie.

My thoughts are some unsuspecting person who doesnt know enough will buy that poor object thinking they are just buying a very young baby who either hasnt developed fully yet, or they will think it has clipped wings.

Unscrupulous ? Yes.

Not the first time this place has been taken to task by me and ignored all.

They had fully mature budgies once in an open display on tree branches...........All had clipped wings so they couldnt fly away and they were advertising them all as baby budgies !! All had mature fully coloured ceres. A customer was about to buy one of these so called baby budgies and I told them they were adults with clipped wings to apear as if they were babies. The manager saw me advising them and came over and stood there giving me the evil eye.

I think I have a pretty good idea on what place you are talking about... Grrr... No one cares these days... its all MONEY MONEY MONEY...! I offen think about opening a bird supply store, foucing on all the accesserices, cages and seeds... All pet stores are the same and its hard not too feel sorry for these birds and other animals in the same sort of places... I just wish there was more we could do to stop things like this happening... :P

I know exactly which place you're talking about and know that they aren't the best place around.

I went there a fair awhile ago and there were two cages full of adults and babies who had beak and feather. I told a staff member and they laughed at me and said I didn't know anything because I was young (I would have been around 20) at the time. :P So ever since I've never been there. It's sad to see they are still doing things like that, poor birds

Yep, I know the place too. :) Last time I was in there (and I am happy to say it was a long time ago) there was a dead budgie in the holding cage. :)

When I notified the manager he gave me this look as to say it was my fault! :P

Not a nice place at all by the sounds of it

Large scale, loads of birds, very commercial - I guess they just don't have the time :P

Places like this must have once opened the store based on a good feeling for birds. Somewhere along the way the commercial gain kicks in and the birds become the least important thing.

Same here renee, I remember going there many of times and seeing the same thing... And I know what look you are talking about too... I reckon we both got the same one...

Sad to think people have lost the way they felt about animals...

What a horrible shop keeper this must be! Can you not report them to the SPCA (assuming you have this organiztion in Australia) Knowingly exposing birds to these sorts of conditions would be looked as animal abuse and they would be charged and hopefully shut down.

Unless it is a clear cut case of gross animal abuse the RSPCA is a toothless tigre. The best thing you can do is vote with your feet and not support them. :)

I also know which place you are talking about. (been a long time since i have been to the forum and much has changed). We actually got a cockateil from there because my hubby fell in love. The cost alone was enough for me to want to walk out but hubby wanted this baby so bad (the poor boy needed a home, had no friends and looked so sad). Their birds are getting squished into cages that need to be bigger and they are money hungry.

I asked why so much for the cockatiel (about triple what anywhere else wanted) and the guy replied cause i can and if you don't like it go elsewhere GRRR. We paid it, better than the other places we went to as far as care went but still massively lacking.

We are on the lookout for possibly another bird in the near future, maybe another cockatiel, budgie or Indian Ringneck but i am wanting to get from someone who raises them properly and actually cares about the animals not the money.

If you're in WA (as it sounds like) Member *libby* is a brilliant breeder. I'd PM her regarding what you are after before going anywhere else.

We are indeed in Perth, thanks for the information about Libby.

I am still researching more about the birds that we are considering. The new bird would have a cage of their own but would be able to communicate with Mystery (our Cockatiel) in the same room once Quarantine was over. They would also be allowed out while we are watching them to make sure no fights occur.

Indian ringnecks appeal to me because they are a little larger but obviously being a tropical bird we may have issues during winter. Budgies are sweet but so small, a little afraid of one getting lost or hurt because of my children (they are great with animals but the youngest is only 3).

Another Cockatiel would also be A-okay, just not sure if we want the same breed of birds or something a little different.

Questions, Questions. I am not in a super hurry to get another bird. I want to wait until we find an animal that suits us as much as we suit them.

Sounds good. Whilst doing your research, you could talk to Libby, just to find out what she is breeding. That way when you decide what you are after, you'll know if she'll have something. Good luck :)

I went into the same place last week during the middle of the day on Thursday. My lunch time entertainment. I could not believe the conditions the inside birds were being kept in. The outside birds were in the relative comfort of the aviary with roof sprinklers but the inside birds - it was truely horrible to see the suffering! The only fan in the place was pointed at the till with all the birds in the extreme heat with no escape, piled into small holding cages. Most were panting, eyes closed in serious discomfort. One in particular looked to be in it's last throws on the cage floor. Now had I seen the birds in such distress I would be doing something and quickly. Did the management look concerned? Only about me looking at the birds in horror.

The other thing is all the poor birds that come here to board. They must have thought they had eneded up in the firey pits of ***.

I walked out of there seriously depressed. This place needs to be closed down.

Well, my friends ringnecks have finshed double clutch breeding many weeks ago so I would assume its finished now.

The birdclub meet is always on the last sunday of the month. Well worth a visit. There were some lovely handraised parrots of varying types there yesterday :)
