Budgie Hens

Our undetermined sex budgie Jesse, is in another cage. Due to quarantine we have her in another cage, it sits lower than the main cage. Hedwig, the undisputed hen(brown cere), would look down on the cage and go into a frenzy over Jesse being in the cage below. Everytime Kramer our male would even get near that side of the cage, Hedwig would go nuts over it and as soon as Kramer would go away from that side of the cage she would calm down. She watched Jesse like a hawk. I had to put something over the top of the cage and Hedwig calmed down and moved away from that side of the cage. Jesse would also hang off the top of the cage as well, although she could not see Hedwig as well as Hedwig could see her. Hedwig also looked like she was ready to jump all over Jesse, thank God for cages lol. Jesse is the one bird we said had the light blue cere with thin white circles around the nostrils. Toni is wondering if the hostile reaction Hedwig is showing towards Jesse is another indication that Jesse is indeed a hen as well, we had Hedwig out of the cage for her out of cage time, Kramer and Jesse were fine, we then took Kramer out of the cage and Hedwig and Jesse fluffed up and glared at each other. we do the out of cage time at different times due to it being easier to catch one bird then all three at once and to prevent any violence between Hedwig and Jesse. I know this covers more than one subject, but the main thrust falls under budgie behaviour

Hens are often more snappy than cocks but I haven't had that problem. I'm pretty sure Jesse is a hen, with the white nostrils, but I could be wrong.

We are starting to think Jesse is definately a female because we checked the cere after putting the cages near each other and Jesse's cere has gone a little more white, there is now very little blue between the nostrils.

Poor Kramer was going crazy so to speak and his cere has now gone a deeper purple. Hedwig has gone a deeper brown.

But there is still tension between hedwig and Jesse, but it is easing.

sounds like a hen as males at any time do not have pale blue. the behavior will be because of the placement, they are social birds and don't like to be separated. Hedwig will be bossier as it is her home and she is in the higher cage.

Quarantine is meant to be in another cage in another room at least 5 metres away and in other airspace. Psittacosis brought in by a carrier bird who doesnt show symptoms will go through a whole room in no time at all. Incubation a week to ten days. You need to be far more careful and educated with quarantine than you are right now.

Maybe I should have done the post instead of hubby B)

Jesse had been quarantine in another area for two months, vet said Jesse is over her problem, hubby should have said that, now Jesse is allowed near the other birds, we are trying to introduce them to each other. but a hedwig doesn't seem to like Jesse at all, Kramer on the other hand is more curious about Jesse, hedwig just keeps screeching at poor Jess.
