Redoing My Aviary's Floor

Featured Replies

Posted

Well, the long time posters and lurkers on here will know that I had to have a tree removed mid last year from behind my aviary, so the aviary was moved to a temporary position.

Well, I am over it being where it is, it is time to move it back, and to this end, I need to do a new concrete slab. Therefore, I need to fix the area where it is going.

Today I removed all the pavers, ripped up the mesh underneath, removed half of the sleepers, and tomorrow I will level it, put in the boundary wood to stop the concrete running all away, and then order the concrete for Thursday ... maybe.

Here are some pics of the area.

Hard work shifting slabs.............did you work up a sweat, Dave :P

getting board are we dave

it has been awhile since you moved them

what made you just decide todays the day

today was the day as I had displayed sheer laziness and a terrible case of apathy on other days :P

B) sounds like me of late

oh where has the motivation all gone :)

well good luck dave i expect to see it finished by week out :(

Very nice, Dave. At first I thought, how can he do this in the middle of winter? But of course, once I saw the photo, I remembered that it is summer, where you are!

By the way, where did you move all the concrete slab pieces to?

Hard, hard work makes Dave a stud in the making! :D

Makes Dave a stud in the making ? Or makes Dave a Budgie Stud :D

you can vote either way, but my vote is for neither. Woe is me.

Time to get out and do more of that slab work and before you know it you'll be bulging in areas you never knew you had! :D

The conrete slab is ordered for Thursday, meant to get here at 1pm. I have to do the formwork before then, but that should not be a problem.

Once the slab is done, I will move the aviary back say saturday, and then the birds back in it that afternoon, all should be good by next week.

I do look forward to getting my paved area back outside my kitchen window.

I will take more pics when I have completed the form work.

It is pretty rough at the moment but a level is not really needed. The conrete is meant to be perfectly level, the dirt does not have to be perfect.

The conrete will not reach the top of the wood.

The conrete will be level, fear not.

Does it just settle and level pretty much on its own... due to gravity? B)

Not really. If you want a smooth level surface, you need to ensure that it is level. You do this by using a piece of timber and sliding it over the dampened surface. The point of this is to ensure that the concrete is not on a slope, unless you want that, and to enssure that there are no little depressions in which water can gather. If you leave it up to gravity, it will not be level, or even smooth.

No, you are right. My brother-in-law and I are doing the conrete-ing on Thursday, which is meant to be 34 degrees or so (I know, chilly for you Perth people, but hot for Sydneysiders) so we will be ensuring it is level.

Well, today is the big day - concreting day!!!!

The concrete guy cannot get here until 1, and the predicted maximum temperature is going to be 37%

Yay team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see why you asked about the level now Kaz, but trust me, they are poorly taken pics. I need a level on the camera - that would be more useful I think!!! B)

It got to 38 degrees here, and the concreting was still completed. I must say my brother in law is a champion.

Here are the first shots.

A few little bits to tidy up here and there, but all up a good effort given the conditions.

Too hot to catch up birds tomorrow, but maybe Sunday the birds will get caught up, Monday the aviary moved, and then the birds in it after that.

All very exciting.

Wow ~ it looks great! You have a wonderful brother-in-law! It can't have been easy in that kind of heat.

I am very lucky to have such a great brother-in-law.

It was very hot out there, trust me.
