Lost One Of My "babies"

Hi All, I discovered one bird I bred this season (19-9-2009) sitting on floor of aviary 3 days ago. I caged him, heat lamp, antibiotics, Avimectin, he was about due and waited. He brightened up a bit I gave him some green seed heads I had in garden which he was eating. He went down hill again didn't know what else I could do. Yesterday he was up and down. On perch etc. calling to other birds down in aviary. This morning he died. I'm sorry to say until he died, I checked him to see if I could find out why, I didn't notice he had a detached lower beak? I think. Looked o.k until I parted feathers to look for mites etc. am adding pics.Thinking poor fellow may not have been able to crack seed and starved? :D

I'm feeling guilty I hadn't noticed this before BUT I'm wondering if this was an accident I wasn't aware of in aviary or could it be caused by anything else? He was very thin when I picked him up, but otherwise no injury etc to make me think he was hurt. All other birds seem okay. I caught them and gave them 3 mthly dose of Avimectin. Now i'm watching them like a hawk in case it was something else. any help appreciated. :D

Oh Robyn I am so sorry for your loss!

Yes it does look like he had some kind of accident and as a result did starve. Was he really thin?

I am not sure if you can do anything about those kind of injuries. Don't feel too badly about yourself for not noticing sooner, you did the best that you could for him.

 the little one.

Thank's Renee, If he had been bleeding etc. from this I'm sure I would have noticed but there was no indication until I saw him on floor, maybe he had been managing with green seed heads vege's etc that I give them but it wasn't enough.

are you sure it was detatched just most parrot type birds have a gap between bottom beak and its normal

when they die the skin sinks making the hollow look worse

i cant see from that picture so

but look at one your live birds and see if this is simula

i would hate you to lose more as you think it was starvation how long he been looking bad

if t was sudden id cheak it again for tears blood what ever sounds weird thats all

Thanks G.B. Maybe I'll have to think again about beak? He had only died an hour or so before I took picture. It was connected both sides just underneath looked broken away from skin. I have buried him now, but there was nothing else wrong. He was very thin when I picked him up. only seemed to eat the soft green seed heads not other seed. If he was ill beforehand he didn't show it, I'm in and out of aviary all the time and check each morning for any signs of an "off" bird.

He wasn't fluffed up etc just sitting on floor which was odd, I had no trouble catching him to check so put him in hosp. cage for safety sake. Only thing makes me wary was we had about 8-9 days from boxing day, rain (drizzle to reasonable) the aviary was dry but the birds could go in and out to flight in rain if they wanted, which they did they have a ball out in it.

I have treated all now with their 3 mth dose of Avimectin. and all look good. Hoping this was just an isolated snag.

did you look at some your other birds under beaks ..did they look simula

Yes G.B. I checked a couple off my birds (and got bitten for my trouble). It looks different from my dead bird in that their skin etc is still attached to beak but dead bird had a jagged "hole" not attached to skin on underside of beak. If that makes sense?

Thank's a lot G.B. I hope I don't lose anymore either but I'd rather know what it was, than wonder.I've been following your other thread, but haven't posted because I don't show birds plus I'm not experienced enough to comment. I just hope your birds take a big upward bound and put all your worries to rest. Thanks heaps for taking an interest in others "minor" setbacks. Since I posted I remember them having a night fright thing a while ago. Couldn't see what set them off maybe my little fellow got hurt that night, I guess I'll never know. Cheer and good luck with your flock.
Awww, so sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss Robyn, But I am with GB I am a little suspicious because you would think if he was attacked or got caught somewhere there would be blood and as you say no blood so it really good be something much sinister, keep a close eye on the others, better still send me a sample and I will be Vet Splat and have a look. No serious you if you want.I mean send me a sample the more practice the better.

Thanks Splat, but I would need to see some qualifications (tongue firmly in cheek). I have buried him now so can't check anything else. The picture I took I enlarged cropped etc. it looks like a jagged break with some bits of beak still on skin side and broken on beak side leaving a hole , he was only 4 mths old so I don't know. picture below is him, I took one 9 days ago but couldn't work out p.bucket. It seem's to be doing something odd it can't be ME. But he looked very similar as in this picture.

Birds can be pretty viscious to each other sometimes. It may have been a demarkation dispute that ended up with some damage inflicted. Strange that there was no blood though.

Hi Nubbly, That's the confusing part , no blood, checked his droppings in cage, seemed normal, he was eating soft seed and looks like he even cracked seed in hosp. cage but he just died!! I even have picture of him eating in hosp cage, the day before he died. I guess I'll just put it down to fate. With an eagle eye on rest of my flock.thanks for the interest. :)
Sorry for your loss Robyn.... B)
