Off On A Holiday With The Little One

Next week we are going on a holiday and are taking Nibbles (our budgie) with us. The trips about 3 hours by car and he has done it plenty of times before so I'm not concerened about that.

The thing I'm concerned about is that the day we are heading off it's forecast to be a hot 35 degrees c. We've been lucky with previous trips that in we've taken him on the weather has been around the low 20's. Our car is kept in our driveway, and gets the full hit of the sun and gets very hot and unfortunatley there is no where we can put it to keep it cool.

Will Nibbles be alright in the hot car (probably will be 35 degrees+) until we can cool the car down a bit? I've got a spray bottle that I can mist him with, although he doesn't like it very much.

Thanks

Could you turn the car on and leave it on whilst packing it; that way it will be cool when you all hop in

Is there any tree's near by you could park under? Or do your neighbours have a carport? If not, I'd probably load the car up with everything, and then go for a drive around just to get the air con going and reduce them temperature a little. I know when I get in my car after work and it's been hot, it's horrible!!!

I do mist my birds at home, but I worry in your case that you mist him, and then the car cools down with the air con... he may be still wet and get a chill. I'd hate for him to be sick while you're away.

The car has a bit of shade covering half of it, but it's usually in full sun at 10am, and we're leaving later. I'll ask my parents to run the aircon for a couple of mins before we leave and maybe park the car down the road, but that'd mean carrying all our bags down the road so i think the aircon idea is better. Thank you both

 I agree...

Maybe you could park it down the road in the shade and bring it up just before you leave to pack it etc... then it may not heat up too much.

I'll run that idea past my mum too. It's always so hetic when we are trying to leave (because my mum has a habbit to leaving most of her packing to the last minute and never seems to realize that maybe it's a good idea to pack the night before  )so we need a simple plan, so I'll let my parents decide. I just don't want Nibbles to become roast budgie :D Because even I hate being in a hot car, its so unbareable. Thank you

Hey Hannah, in the most friendly way possible, I'd like to mention, you might want to cut your mom some slack. :D Not only do us moms have to be responsible for our own bag when we go on a trip, but we also have to plan the trip, plan for having everything at home looked after while we're gone, pack up all the stuff the whole family will need on the trip, and, depending on the ages of the children, oversee what they pack! If animals are going, we need to make sure we have every possible thing they might need, which is basically another suitcase. Your mom is probably so busy doing all of this the night before, that she doesn't have time to get to her bag till morning. (Did I mention laundry before packing?)

Well, I know in my case, I am a wreck by the time we all get in the car, and we are inevitably later than planned, and the kids will be bored from already sitting in the car for half an hour before we even start driving! :D

Maybe it would help your cause if you volunteer to see if there is any work around the house you can do for your mom while she's preparing for the trip. If she is able to have things under control, she might be more willing to park the car down the road and drive it around the block a bit to get the aircon going. (i.e. 2 days before the trip, do all the laundry for her, so she is impressed and pleased! B) )

Haha, I know I probably should. It just can get annoying sometimes when she says "Alright, we'll head off at 10.30" and we don't end up leaving till 12 :P I think we are going to just keep the car in the driveway and just run the aircon for 5 mins before we head off.
