For about 12 months I've been feeding my budgies turkey starter. It was suggested to me after I bought a budgie from a breeder who uses it for his birds. Him and his dad have been involved in all sorts of birds for over 20 years.

It contains probiotics and such (don't know the exact ingredients).

I give it to them with their seed.

Has anybody else used this?

I haven't had any sickness in my birds (knock on wood) and my chicks are healthy and I've suffered no loses in that regard.

I've been reading on the forum about ill health that some people are having with their birds and I wanted to inform people that maybe the turkey starter is a good thing.

I have nothing negative to say about it concerning my use of it so thought that maybe it was something that I could put out there for anybody's use or non use.

I'm not saying that it's the be all and end all of healthy birds, just maybe something for you to think about or even try.

Do you know anymore about it like the brand and maybe some ingredients etc, I know of breeders that you chicken starter.

I tried it but my birds wouldnt eat it. How are you serving yours ? and what brand or manufacturer is it of the one you get ?

There is no brand label on the bag that I remember as I store it in a bucket and have thrown the bag out. I can try and find out some more info when next I buy some. It's with the stock feed and produce at the bird place I buy it from. Other than that I don't know brand or manufacturer or ingredients but I will try and get that info.

I just give it with their seed. It's in pellet form but it does get a bit powdery. If I feel like it I'll try to crush it a bit more and mix with their soft food. But otherwise they just get it when they get seed.

Yes I have used it, it has a very high protein content. Best fed during breeding season. Clearwing

Can you tell if they are eating it, or if they are leaving most of it behind?

When I researched the rabbit and guinea pig pellets my budgies like to eat, I found a great variance re brand names and ingredients. I was also told by a stock feed place that a lot of these similar products ( pellets etc ) are the same and bagged into differing bags.....i.e. sheep and cattle pellets are the same but sold in differing packaging etc. Rabbit/guinea pig pellets vary greatly depending on manufacturer. I found some more local to me but werent a patch on the ones I find my budguies love to eat.

It's made by a company called Thompson & Redwood Produce Supplies and I buy from a pet store in Midland.

WARNING: DO NOT USE CHICKEN STARTER to feed your birds unless you know 100% what it contains. MOST pelleted chick starter has infeed anticoccidials to help young chicks through a very susceptable time in their life. Infeed anticoccidials suitable for chicks are known to cause poor hatchability in breeding poultry and deaths in horses & dogs (at high rates). You need to be 100% sure that no infeed anticoccidials are added to the pellets before you consider using the feed for your birds.

 

Turkey starter is probably better as turkeys are pretty sensitive and I know that the anticoccidials used in chicken starters were not added to turkey starter for this reason.

 

Also be mindful that these sorts of products are developed for the animals they are marketted for and are generally formulated around the minimum nutritional requirements for THAT animal. You ALSO need to know that feedmills use a LEAST COST ration system. That means that ingredients can and often do change, depending on their current local price and availablility, so long as the minimum specs are still met.

No that just means megajules of metabolisable energy/kilo. Standard test used to determine the available energy from the feed. But remember that it's a standard lab test so doesn't relate exactly to what the different animals can truely utilize - gives a standard comparison though.

?Hi, my question is if the birds actually consume the pellets, since I have noticed that they turn it into powder by chewing it-so do they just chew it for fun or do they actually eat it??
