Breeding Pairs 2010

Featured Replies

Posted

Well, the 2009 year ended, so the thread ended. A good breeding year, my first with show budgies.

With the new year, there will be new pairs, but to start off, the pairs that remain in the breeding room.

Bruticus and his Albino hen have a few eggs, one of which has hatched so far. This is their second clutch, so it is their first for this year, and their last for a little while. There are a couple of fostered eggs in there. By the time they are ready to hatch, other pairs will be down to assist.

My Dark Green cock, his GreyGreen Hen and their little GreyGreen male chick from their second cock. They are both in good condition and are in the kindy cage to give the little one some company, and also to allow them to regain some strength before heading back into the aviary.

New pairs will hopefully go in tomorrow, so more pics will come then.

Glad to hear that your first year of breeding show budgies went well. Hope that this year is just as good for you.

so cute

My thoughts, exactly! :)

Wow, Dave, I didn't realize that last year was your first year breeding show types. I obviously would have no clue of what looks good on the bench, but I was thinking your birds looked really good. :D

Been a big day in the breeding aviary

A birth - the second egg from Bruticus and the albino has hatched, and it is another plum-eyed chick, so it seems that we have 2 cinnamons. The thing is, from what I know, there is no cinnamon in the hen's background, whilst I know the cock is split for cinnamon as his dad was a cinnamon, so all the cinnamons are hens. In their first clutch, they only had 2 chicks. One was cinnamon and the other wasn't. Both were opaline, and it seems that both are hens. Now this clutch looks to be batting two for two with hens. It is harder to get hens, so this is good, however I bought the hen so I could initially breed some cocks that were split ino, and grey. No cocks so far from this pair.

Also some new pairs were put down. Pics below.

Congratulations on your chicks Dave :hi: New pinkies are always exciting. I can't believe you've only been breeding show budgies for a year! They are great!

Exciting times B) Hows the weather over your way ?
It is exciting. The weather has been very good. About 30-ish degrees today, but that was only around midday, clouded over by 2pm. Meant to be a wet january.

Thank you. I have learnt a lot in a year, plus I have had a very good teacher. Let me say very honestly, most of the help I have had and the things I have learnt have initially started on this forum. I may have read other books and things, and I had previously bred pet types, but my club has been no where as helpful as this forum. As for the cinnamon wing green hen, she is very nice isn't she?

Out of this photo,

P1010036.jpg

so far there have been three hatchings. Two have plum eyes, indicating they are cinnamon winged and female. I think the third is dark eyed. I will have to double check. It is all going good so far.

Just went and checked, and it seems I was wrong. All three look to have plum eyes. This would mean that I most probably have 5 hens from 5 hatchlings with this pair.

5 for 5, huh? What are the odds! :)

I read somewhere once (it was about dog litters) that even though the odds of female/male are 50/50, you would rarely get a litter like that. But I think it is also true that you would rarely get a litter (or a nest) with all same sex. But here you are. Our neighbor's cat once had 5 female kittens, and no boys. Are there more eggs to hatch in there?

P1010036.jpg

If you look at that photo i think all the eggs around the outside are fertile, so potentially there are 6 fertile eggs.

Oh, yeah, I can see what you mean. You know, that one tucked underneath the chick's head there, looks a little darker than the others, but it could be shadow, couldn't it? Maybe it is fertile, too.

The one behind the chick's butt does look kinda pinker.

Two eggs were fostered into that nest from a hen that I did not allow to have a third clutch. I think the two pinker eggs may be hers. Either way, I think most the eggs in there are fertile, with cinnamon winged hens it seems - :cake:

So if the foster eggs were to hatch, you would be able to tell by the eyes? Or is the cinnamon hen expected to have normal boy chicks?

The two fostered eggs come from a dark green to a greygreen pairing. The young are guaranteed to be green or greygreen.

This pairing is a grey/blue/cinnamon/opaline to an albino masking blue. There is no way this pairing can produce green chicks.

I am pretty sure that I will know who were the parents of any chicks.

Oh, I get it! I took this to mean the mother was a cinnamon winged hen! Oops :D So since the father is /cinnamon, you can get normal eye babies from him. But the green is the way you are telling with this foster.

If I have to foster, I will have to keep careful track of who is who, because I won't be able to go by mutations :D:D

Not working out who is fostered where can be a problem. Some people use markers on eggs. So far, I hae only had to foster twice. Once two eggs went to a grey opaline to grey opaline pair. The two fostered eggs hatched and produced a DF white spangle and the other one was a cobalt opaline spangle. There was no way there could be any mistakes here.

As for the current breeding pairs:

Cage 1: Bruticus and Albino hen - they now have 4 little chickies in there. Doubling the first clutch, with more eggs to go. If the other hatch, then fostering becomes an issue. Anyway, at least 3 are plum eyed, so they are cinnamon. Not sure on the fourth yet.

Cage 2: Grey and GreyGreen Spangle - hen has checked out the nestbox and is perching outside it on a regular basis.

Cage 3: Green Spangle and GreyGreen normal - sawdust inside the box has been distrubed, but no action yet.

Cage 4: Cinnamon Wing Blue and Blue normal - sawdust inside the box has been distrubed, but no action yet.

Cage 5: Opaline Green Dominant Pied and Cinnamon Green - sawdust inside the box has been distrubed, but no action yet.

It is amazing how fast things change.

These photos were taken today. I took these photos on my iphone. Sorry. As great as it is, the camera still leaves a bit to be desired. I will take some better pics tomorrow.

and more to come...................terrific !!!

The more to come does worry me actually. I am worried that there will be too many in there. This was the last of the breeding pairs that went down, now there are new pairs, but none are even at the egg laying stage yet. i did not stagger my pairs very well I am afraid.

I think that potentially at least 2 more eggs are fertile.

What to do?

If that photo is today Dave,I would

t be panic to put the rings on,big chance of the falling off.

If they are a good feeders they will look after them.

I looked at the feet, and they are tiny.

I ringed one, but if it comes off, i will do it again.

I would rather be early than late.

I have put some extra seed in there, and I think feeding will be fine.

The chicks can be 8 to 10 days old & the rings will

still fit, with out to much trouble.

You would't put a ring on your own finger

that was loose & could slip off.
