Posted January 1, 201015 yr My budgie does this thing where he'll scratch his cere with his foot (basically the same as when a budgie preens is cheek feathers with its foot, if you get my drift) and then he'd like sneeze and a wet liquid sprays out of his nostrils. He'll do this about 3 times and then he'd be fine. Is this normal, or is it something that I should be concerned about? It's not a sudden thing that his being doing, he's probably been doing it for a year or so off and on and his health definitely hasn't deteriorated, he's still his bubbly, chatty self I don't think it's a respiratory infection, because he doesn't have any trouble breathing, though sometimes he does this thing where he sticks his neck out as far as it can go and seems to be gulping, but I think he's just regurgitating.? Thanks!
January 1, 201015 yr Perhaps a vet check up might be warranted. This thing, whatever it is, may not kill your bird, but it may weaken him, so if he is accidently in a draft or gets sick with something else, his immune system is already low. I say a vet check up. $50 is what my vet charges. They are at Austral. Where in Sydney are you? Do you have a good avian vet near you?
January 1, 201015 yr Author Okay. I'm in Chatswood. No, we have no avian vets near us. The two only vets close to us do not specialize in birds (have asked them both already) unfortunately, and one of them killed a dog of someone I knew because they used unsterilized equipment :| But I'll see what I can do. Is there anything I could do myself, ie. buy him vitamin drops for his water? Edited January 1, 201015 yr by Hannah
January 1, 201015 yr There are a lot of different vitamins and supplements you can buy, but you do not know if they are doing any good without a proper diagnosis of what is wrong.
January 1, 201015 yr Author I understand. I've found a few other vets near me, and I'll call them soon. Thanks.
January 1, 201015 yr Author Do you think it's worth me taking him to the vet Liv? Does anyone else have an opinion they'd like to share? I've been researching about possible things he could have, but most infections the budgie would have other symptoms which he doesn't have and nothing really seems to fit. I think he gets it roughly every two weeks? Thinking back, I think he's had it for like 2 or more years? If it is an irritation what could it be? Could it be dust? Because my house is dust prone, unfortunately. I will take him to the vet if that's what people think is best for him. But he hates being held even by me and is terrible with strangers.
