Difficulty Training Pimms

Featured Replies

Posted

when i first got my budgie my brother (not a nice person) tried to pick him up. pimms (my budgie) bit him on the hand and my brother drew his hand back fast with pimms still attached. pimms hit the side of his cage and got very upset.

eight months on from this, and i am having great difficulty training my budgie because he is very agresive and bites every time i put my hand near him. its quite upsetting for me and pimms.

could the incident at the start of my time with him be the cause of his agression?

please has anybody got any advice?

hi,

i recently got my first budgie, smash, and a few days after i got him one of other half's rats bit his leg. he ended up loosing a toe over it all and was rather aggresive towards anything/ one. smash has had his wing clipped to make it easier to handle him. he comes out of the cage of a day and has to be caught to go back in(he cant fly back up to it). It has taken a while for him to start settling back down. he still screams at my hand but is starting to sit around for longer times. like i said he is getting handled daily whether he likes it or not and is coming around. be patient and persistant - i still get biten by smash daily lol, but its getting softer. maybe use a towel or cloth over your hand to stop the bites.

Have you checked the FAQ for taming ideas? I wrote up an article there that you may find of interest :D

cheers.

i dont really want to have to clip his wings, if i was a bird id be pretty ticked off if i couldnt fly any more.

good news. today i re-arranged pimms' cage so his door opens up to make a platform that i put millet on and he comes onto to it. i let him get used to it for a couple of minutes and then took the millet away and put it on my hand he then, after a little hesitation, hopped on to my hand. i took the millet away and he stayed there and was very interested, not scared. thank you both. this is alot of progress for me and i feel alot better. he is however not trusting anyone else. as soon as people walk into the room he cowers int the corner of his cage, but i sopose thats expected. (it sort of makes me feel more special that he doesnt like anyone else) :P

p.s. thanks elly your article was very useful

Ooh, he's pretty! Is he opaline? And pictures don't always reflect proper color, but his cere is looking kind of female to me. In real life, is it a deep blue, or is it light blue and kind of whitish?
ill put a clearer image on later

also what does opaline mean?

Here is a link to member's budgies: click here

In opaline, you will see the body color in the wings, back of head and in a v pattern on the back between the wings. It won't really have black bars on the head, more like colored bars. Hopefully that will make sense when you see the pictures

Opaline is a striping pattern mutation. It reverses the striping pattern on the head feathers so that there are thicker white areas and thinner black stripes. Another feature which adds to the beauty of this mutation is that the body feather color runs through the stripes on the back of the neck and down through the wing feathers. Opaline budgies' tails are characteristically patterned with light and colored areas running down the tail feather.

Basic Genetics:

Sex-linked (on the x-chromosome)

Personally this bird doesn't look opaline looks like a normal green, the cere looks very blue in the picture denoting a male.

that is a good thing, he likes your hand because he trusts it and wants to be near you plus I didn't read everything above but if he is dancing and biting on your nails he is flirting with you like he would be another budgie.

hes obsessed with my head.

They feel safe when they're in a higher place, so that is why he likes your head.. it is higher than the rest of you.

I agree that Pimms is not opaline.

But I am thinking from that photo that he is a she... do you have any more close ups of his face?
