Starting To Breed Budgies.

Featured Replies

O.k. I found out when we are going away, it's not until next month so I'm starting now. Have supplied budgies with extra calcium and vegies and nesting box. They have a night light. I may need a lot of help to point me in the right direction. Just wondering, if my budgies breed successfully what would you get with a violet/blue and a green/blue? I know that it is a long way before I do.

I don't understand....why if you are going away would you starting to breed your budgies?

If everything goes well you still need to allow yourself 2 months for mating-brooding-hatchlings-fledglings ... it is more likely you will need 3 months just to be on the safe side.

It is quite amazing how many "issues" can arise during this period, just have a browse of the Budgie Breeding Forum and there are tons of topics on what can happen. ;)

Sure you can go away on holiday when you want, but you only need to read a little further to hear about how so and so was away for just a few days and the misfortunes that they have experienced ...

Early intervention and a proactive attitude are essential for looking after your budgies and you need to be with them to do that. ^_^

Sorry, I was a bit vague. We're only going away for a few days and our friends across the road look after them. They are in a big cage outside. Sorry I meant huge! Oh, I see, I've put down that I'm starting now! I meant soon.

well i knew what you ment but then im dislexic lol

with a violet /blue and a green split blue

you could get

greens

violets

blues depending on dark factor of birds im guessing violet is visual so cobalt which is medium factor

and green well depending on its dark factor depends on resulting of baby's dark factors so

i will stick to colours not go into skys or cobalt's mauve's or what not as i only would be guessing

this would include the possible violet green

more info would have helped

Just to refresh

Colony breeding ?

and timeframes for stuff........................

If the pair is bonded and start mating with a nestbox in sight..............1 week to ten days to first egg

To begin to sit and incubate add another week or so as they begin to incubate around egg # 3 or 4

Say 5- 6 eggs around 12 days or so and 18-21 days from the 3rd or 4th egg to incubate to hatching the first egg.

Chicks in the nest that need checking twice daily over 4-5 weeks once all are hatched out.

If you are going away at the time your birds are just beginning their egglaying, then you will have to be watching closely for any that become eggbound. if you are away during that time and the person watching your birds doesnt notice or doesnt act fast enough you can have a dead hen from eggbinding.

With all these things to consider...you will need to time your breeding and holiday to coincide with the easiest part of the breeding.............either be away when they first pair up ( but if you are colony breeding thats the time when they will all fight over nestboxes ) or after the eggs are laid and hens are sitting and waiting for hatchings.

Something to think about ^_^

you said you were only going away for a day or to

so why not wait that extra few days and put them up when your home

makes more scene its just a few extra days

and belive me it only takes one small thing to make a hen even crack it with her partner and try and kill him

theirs that also

were not trying to scare you just want you to have your birds when you come home

not come home to a dead one or worse both

you waited this long bit longer wont hurt

Just to refresh

This is very handy information to know, Kaz. Is it pinned anywhere? It would make a great reference, because I think a lot of people don't think about how the different stages affect the timing when they first start out.
