4 Week Old Chick Died

Featured Replies

I awoke this morning to find that my older chick at 4 weeks died, just like that, there were no signs what so ever. It was strong and healthy last night!!! I don't understand, how can this happen and is it common at all??. there nothing pointing to the reason>>>>

It had splayed leys which were 100% fixed, gave it calivet to beak for 6 days stopped 5 days ago though.....could that be the reason!!!!

Has this happened to anybody else??????????

I'm so sorry about your loss - it has to have been a terrible shock and disappointment. :D

I'm afraid sometimes unexplainable deaths do happen, though usually not this late in the chick's development. It must have been carrying an underling infection of some kind and succumbed to it.

Monitor its siblings closely, check their body weight by holding them and feeling for their keel bones, if its protruding you know they are underweight .... in that case try crop feeding once a day and take them to the vet for a full check up. If you are proactive you may prevent further deaths and if they have caught an infection either from the parents or the nest you can intervene early. :D

Hey thanks for that!!!!

It wasn't thin when it died....the others are also good body weight and feed!!

I noticed it did have food in its crop when it died also!!

Don't know the others look okay...But so did the one that died!!!

I also noticed it had dryed droppings around its bum, don't know weather that was the cause...that it couldn't pass more through!!!

I'll keep close eye on the others!!!!

Cheers

Poopy bums is definitely a sign of illness. What happens is the poop blocks up its cloaca and new droppings can't get through so the bird dies from internal poisoning.

If I see any sign of poopy bums I give Triple C in the water for 3-5 days.

okay, I got Triple C from City Farmers. It is one of those generic antibiotics that actually work that you can get 'over the counter' without going to the vet. It's active ingredient is Chlorotetracycline Hydrochloride and treats E.coli, (Enteritis), Mycloplasma spp. (Chronic respiratory disease) and Chlamydia psitici (Psittacosis).

I agree. I also would put triple c in the parents water.

if the dad is a good feeder of his chicks, maybe you should remove the hen to another cage out of earshot and allow dad to finish raising the chicks.

Will I move the hen to another cage with a nest and keep the eggs or discard them.....

whether you continue the hen laying and keep the eggs is up to you, the hen, the condition of the hen and whether or not she is up to it, or due for a rest.

A hen determined to lay again usually doesnt want the chicks in there while she does. She may attack her own chicks. If you allow this to continue with chicks in the nest, you run the risk of attacks on the chicks still in the nestbox. Some hens are fine, others arent.

Thanks Kaz,

What are the early signs of the hen not being fine with the chicks in there!!!

She seems good with them still>>.

thats the probblem their is no real sighns they could be good then bam you could go look to find chicks sculped or bleeding from cere from being atacked

all hens are unprodictable

but you can tell sometimes as their like a cranky mother whos had enough of their child telling them to move with the eeeeeeee eeee eeee sounds

i wouldnt let her sit id remove eggs layed keep them aside and when chicks are another week old asess her condition and health if shes good and the chicks stay healthy mabe id put all eggs layed under her then

if you do this replace eggs with marbles so she goes back to sitting when returned if thats what you choose

me id rest her untill summer over unless your somewhere cold
