Posted December 27, 200915 yr Hello everyone and Merry Christmas!.... I took this chick out of the nesting box and on the floor of the same cage yesterday as it was fully feathered and will be 5 weeks old tomorrow, I put a ice cream container on the floor of the cage with seed and millet and 2 small shallow water pots....It seemed to really freak out....panting very heavy and was not interested in the ice cream container at all, I popped her in there, she was just running around the bottom of the cage until she worked out how to get back to the nesting box... I took her out again to the floor, this time with her sibling which is a few days younger than she is, the younger one just perched with mum and dad, the other one was panting and her chest was pounding and found her way back to the nesting box. There is another chick that is not fully feathered yet so I don't want to remove the nesting box just yet. When this chick is in the nesting box it just has its head right up the back in a corner, while the others are moving around and waiting at the entrance for food, this one does not moove, I have not seen mum or dad feed this one for a while, the nesting box bedding is seed and millet and has been for 2 weeks but this chick is a bit thin... Should I be concerned?, I have never seen a chick act this way before....seems very nervous although does not attempt to bite be when its being held, there is nothing that would have frightened it that I am aware of. What are your thoughts?
December 27, 200915 yr Is there a reason you want her out of the nesting box? Can she not stay in there with her siblings? I have had chicks that did not want out, to the extent that mother was happy to have particular chicks stay in there, even when she was laying eggs and sitting on them. Give this chick a couple more days in the nestbox. Put some seed on the floor on the nestbox so she can learn to pick at it herself.
December 27, 200915 yr Author Thanks for the reply Dave. I don't want mum and dad to go for a third round, I want them to have a rest, as well as it will be way too hot for my birds to be breeding from now on, mum and dad are mating again so I was a bit eager to remove the nestbox - I have had seed and millett in the nestbox for 2 weeks. I will leave them alone til next weekend to see what happens.
December 27, 200915 yr if mum lays just remove the eggs you are not killing anything as until the egg is sat on incubation does not take place it beats me why people think their killing chicks, and wont take/remove eggs when if you look at it their only killing their main breeders quicker and running them down by letting them sit hatch and raise chicks people apparently say they don't want a third round or i don't want her to lay personally i think if that's the case tossing eggs is not that hard its an egg its got a yoke not a fetus if you take it straight after laying so ..... this is not pointed at anyone particularly and just thought id put it here as you mentioned not wanting a third round was not meant toward you anne id say chick is fine just let mum do her thing dad also the other chicks will asist it in eatting and it will get feed when its hungry enough to ask just whatch mum and dad for agressive ness or if your really worryed leave the adult bird who is the main feeder /carer of chicks in box and remove the other Edited December 27, 200915 yr by GenericBlue
December 27, 200915 yr Author You are right GB.....I have removed eggs before but have an "issue" with it I guess, I need to look at it in a different way.... I will leave them alone as their is plenty of food available and if she does lay any more I will just toss them out... Thanks
