Posted December 27, 200915 yr hey guys!! i currently have a type 2 yellow face gray opaline cock with a normal gray hen in my large cage with breeding box.my normal green hen and the gray cock were housed together for a while before a got the gray hen and put her and the cock in the big cage with a breeding box and left the green hen next to them in a smaller cage and now the green and the gray seem to talk to each other through the cages and the gray hen stays away from the cock. the cock bird seems to want to breed because he ummm..... does things with one of the perches....like trys to mate with it(dunno how that would feel!!). so i was wondering if i should put them together and if they breed what would the babies look like?? just so that your sure it would be normal green hen x type 2 yellow face gray opaline get back to me on this one :hi: :emoticon112:
December 27, 200915 yr normal green hen x type 2 yellow face gray opaline Offsrping would be: 100% greygreens all hens will be opaline. Now, this is assuming there are no splits. For example, the grey boy might be a single factor grey, so he is split for blue. If the green is also split for blue, there is a 25% chance you could get blues. You could also get greens, greys or greygreens. Without knowing parentage, the simplest answer is the one I typed first - 100% greygreens
January 1, 201015 yr Author but should i put them together? or should i leave the yellow face gray with the normal gray because they don't seem interested in each other and the yellow face is more interested in the green
January 2, 201015 yr normal green hen x type 2 yellow face gray opaline If the grey & the yellow face are both single factor and the hen is split for blue you'd get: 12.5% normal green cocks 6.25% normal blue cocks 6.25% yellow face blue cocks 12.5% grey green cocks 6,25% grey cocks 6.25% yellow face grey cocks 12.5% opaline green hens 6.25% opaline blue hens 6,25% yellow face opaline blue hens 12.5% opaline grey green hens 6.25% opaline grey hens 6.25% yellow face opaline grey hens
January 2, 201015 yr Hi Jeddo, as I was reading over your post, I realized that what you have done is to split up two boys who were great friends and put one of them in with an unfamiliar hen, and left the other one all alone, but nearby. Probably what is happening is that the two boys love and miss each other, and are trying to stay close through the wire. That would be why he's not interested in the hen in his cage. If you switched the boys, you would probably still have the same issue. Is there any way you can buy a 2nd hen, and keep them all together in one cage (with no nest box) until the two boys learn to bond with the new girls? Then you could split them up into pairs according to how they have paired up on their own. (Eventually the best buddy males will see the benefit of making friends with a girl ) Alternatively, if you want to be the one who decides which cock gets which hen, you could pair them separately, but keep the cages apart, so each cock eventually gives up and realizes the only friend he's gonna have is the new girl in with him. Another benefit of this is that it generally works better to have more than one pair of budgies breeding at the same time, which you can't do with 3 birds. As I see it, you really need a 4th budgie. Even a new cock would work, if you left the two bosom buddies alone together, and put the new cock with the new hen. (But then you would still have the problem of only one breeding pair.) Realize also, that all of this is going to take some time. You need to be patient, and in the meantime, you could be learning all about budgie breeding- there is a lot to know!
January 2, 201015 yr Author thats not the case i housed the green HEN with the yellow faced gray cock for a little while then got a new hen and moved the green HEN in with my blue cock (whos a funny little one) and the yellow faced gray cock with the new hen( who is gray.) now the yellow face seems to be more interested in the green hen. i was wondering whether i should put the green hen with the yellow faced cock.

Boy do I feel really silly! Sorry about that. And here I was trying to re-read it so I would understand it better. FAIL okay, so you had a pair that was together for a while, and you have split them up and put them with new partners, but they still seem to pine for each other? Have I got it now? If so, then yes, you might have better success putting them together, if they are already bonded. But you could still try to pair them the other way if that is what you prefer, but you would probably have to wait a long time for them to bond.
