Feather Loss Around Eyes?

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I have an albino cock who has lost his feathers around one of his eyes. He isn't molting at the moment if that makes any difference ... Other than that I haven't noticed anything else wrong with him except perhaps preening a bit more than usual.

Does anyone have any idea what's wrong with him or what I could give him that might help?

Thanks!

Kathleen.

Check beak and feet for signs of scaly face mites.

Hi Kaz,

I've just checked and they both seem to be normal.

Post pictures if you can. Also spread wing flights out and look for tiny brown specks which may indicate feather mites.

okay, Here are two pics, I can upload more if need be.Sick1.jpgSick2.jpgSorry I forgot to add, you can see in the first photo a bit of skin near his cheek, another possible bald patch? Also I did worm them 3 days ago, if that can have any effect?

I've seen that before. Sometimes it can be an indicator of Chlamydia Psitticsosis (doxy is the best treatment for that) and sometimes it can be a one eye sore cold (baytril does the trick for that). On another post Liv recommended a cream of Ionic Silver (from your local health store) which did the trick and cleared up the eye ....

Because it could be an indicator of a number of things I'd say you're best taking your budgie to the vet for a proper diagnosis. ;)

yes renee it can be a sign of chlamydia but there are other signed with that disease, you would be best to have a vet check him out.

The eye issue with chlamydia is more a weeping runny eye not a bald or feather loss eye.

I had a bird that had that, she died after about a month even with vet treatment. She continued to lose weight the whole time she was being treated.

I think one or two other people have posted with the exact same problem and I have yet to hear of a sound diagnosis or treatment option. My avian vet never did pin down an exact cause.

One of my birds had the exact same thing, I took her to the avian vet and they didn't know what it was..Gave me some antibiotics for something else wrong with her they found, and she was fine..

Go to a good avian vet! This also could be the beginning of a sinusitis, which can become very painful for the bird.

Best wishes,

Sandra
