Posted April 25, 200520 yr i work at a vet that sees birds, but we never deal with breeding, so i know he needs to go to the vet its pretty swollen and he's scratching at it, but what do i do with the babies, they are 3 weeks old and he feeds them more than the female does. my primary concern is that when i got to work and bring him, its going to have to be for my whole shift, so should I bring everyone or just him? thank you i appreciate it i leave for work in 2 hours, and just realized how bad his eye got since last night-k :doctor:
April 25, 200520 yr take him the hen should be fine and if it gets worse the hen will have to feed them and you want to make sure it cant be passed on to the chicks
April 25, 200520 yr Let us know what happened. If the eye is just bruised, it may take a while for him to be able to open it properly...it's been two weeks for one of mine and it's still not normal yet. Hopefully no damage was done to the eye itself.
April 25, 200520 yr I posted this in another section but it applies here too. thank you for your replies, we have had an eventful day. I posted in another section about my female attacking my male... and we just got back from the avian vet (where I work). He has a swollen eye, a very injured beak and bites and bruises all over him. and to top it off I left the babies with her for the day (because i had to work a full shift) and when i got home she had not fed them all day!!! I put him back in the cage while I got another cage set up because we obviously need to seperate mom & dad. they didn't fight but he immediately started to feed the poor things and they were ravenous. I can't believe she didn't feed them!! I had noticed him doing most of the feeding lately and I know that's normal but i don't think its normal for mom to completely stop??!! anyway, that made my descision of who to keep with the babies- dad it is. He's so ouchy from her attack and yet he is rushing around like crazy trying to feed the 2 babies. I did by the way help him with so handfeeding formula. In answer to the reply about stopping their breeding I tried...we did hormone shots, took out all nesting areas, and I did try seperating them. She was on the first 2 methods when she laid the last 8 eggs. And whenI seperated them she ripped out all her feathers!! Now they don't have a choice they have to be apart I just hope she doesn't feather pick again His eye should be fine I have some antibiotic drops for it, no permanaet damage. Wish me luck. PS here's to no more eggs :

May 2, 200520 yr I hope everything goes well for you and your birds. You're lucky to have such a kind daddy bird!
May 4, 200520 yr I just stopped his eye meds yesterday, it looks a million times better. All your good luck replies worked. Both babies at 4 weeks old are already mostly weaned and almost always out of the nest (all by themselves) He is a GREAT dad. Kristi
May 4, 200520 yr I'm glad his eye is on the mend. And those babies sound like they're going well too!
May 8, 200520 yr well dad is back to 100% , his feathers are growing in where she pulled them out, I have now started to let them visit each other with supervision, mostly because she started feather picking her tail as soon as I seperated them. they've done good so far but i still nervous, but i don't know what else to do cause I don't want her hurting herself. aaah, kristi
