Ken went to see why our dogs were getting excited down the backyard behind the aviaries...they usually do that over a mouse or rat. Imagine his shock, when a snake came out between both our dogs and aggressively reared up and struck out at Ken. Seems to be a Dugite snake. We have locked up the dogs and are trying to get someone to come and get the snake.

 

**** A man is coming to remove the snake. Its currently curled up in a blue tarpaulin at the back of our bird aviaries

Snake has been removed for release back into the bush.

Yes, it was definitely a dugite....around 4-5 feet long. You should have heard Ken scream when the snake reared up

 

Due to it being curled up in the tarp, the handler caught it easily. He just reached in and grabbed it behind its head and lifted it out.

I would have screamed too, I hate snakes!! I've never heard of a dugite before so I looked it up. I was very releived to see they only exist in your part of Australia!

 

Still we get browns, red belly blacks and copperheads up here.

We think we have one here too our dog has been going crazy near a bush near the bird room and what ever it is it is coming from the wood heap and going into the bush which is a climber a night and there is a pond in front of the climber, buffy is trying to jump up into the bush , so question is can a snake climb up a climber and I think the answer is YES\question can a lizard climb up a climber. It is not a possom or anything like that because we have been shaking the climber bush really hard and you think it woould move, last night I was shoving my hand in their when I yelled out to Greg can a snake climb up trees and bushes and he yelled back yes WELL did I pull my arm out fast Anyway still don't know what it is YET

 

BUT back to you Kaz glad you got that snake before it got your dogs OR BIRDS

THey're a relative of the brown snake and are deadly - so my research found

okay I reserched it too, yes like are brown snake.

We have brown, red belly back and tiger snakes around here and there are others but they are the ones we see the most, actually I see brown snakes on the road nearly every day.

Yuck

Dugites are the worst... well not quite... but they aren't very fun to get tangled with......

How scary is THAT!

You are right ......fluke that the dogs managed to worry the snake but keep out of striking range.......and I look at small gaps under doors etc and realise how easily things like snakes can get in too

They certainly can get into places. I had a baby dugite in my bird room some years ago. I don't fear them as I have worked with them. I just made a catching tool, grabbed a pillow case, caught it and then released it into the bush.

 

Out at Dryandra state forest there some enclosures set up for breeding endangered species...bilby etc. Came across the largest dugite I have ever seen. It had slithered through the fence (cyclone mesh) and back out and up about a foot slithered in again and out. Got itself to the point that it was not going to get out. Don't know how long it was there but it died soon after we saw it.

you are lucky no one, dogs or ken, got bitten.

I am not scared of snakes either, but its still scary to have them so close. I am so pleased no one got hurt.

Yikes, I have only ever seen one snake in the wild, but we get tigers, copper-heads, browns and who knows what else. I'm not scared of snakes really, if you leave them alone they usually don't go for you but your lucky Kaz, that it didn't manag to kill any of your dogs or birds.
