January 12, 201015 yr Author Lots of pinkies! How exciting for you! I'm very pleased for you Finnie Thank you, Amy. Looks exciting at your place, too! Its all go at your place eh The funny thing is, I was telling my son that very day, I wish budgie eggs all just hatched on the same day, and get it over with. And his wise answer was that then the mom wouldn't be able to feed them all very well. Then last night I dreamt that all 21 eggs were hatched, and were all in one box together, and all with blue feathers at birth! I couldn't count them, or tell them apart!
January 12, 201015 yr Author Well! I got so caught up in reading today's new posts, that I forgot about the pictures I was uploading to Photobucket!! Here is Colleen's nest with the newly hatched 5th chick: And here are some photos I was able to take of Finnie's 3rd chick hatching. First, the shell is cracked. This is before I picked off the loose piece. After I picked off the piece, you can see the chick inside: When I checked on the chick about 20 minutes or so later, it was half out of the shell. I was going to leave it alone until morning, but I couldn't resist one last peek, but, didn't use the camera at that time, since I didn't want to disturb them too much. At that time, the chick was fully hatched. It is now time to do the morning feed, and to check on them, so I'm sure I will have more photos in a moment!
January 12, 201015 yr I'm so very happy for you. They look to be doing well and well fed I can't wait to start breeding, and having my own pinkies to put on here. I'm going to wait for awhile though p.s I love the before and during photos of new hatchling Edited January 12, 201015 yr by Amy S
January 12, 201015 yr Author Here is a picture of Finnie's 3rd hatchling (plus it's siblings ) You can see that it has been fed, and it looks okay to me. Phoebe's 5 eggs: The one on the upper left appears pinker, so I guess I will probably only get 4 chicks from Bailey and Phoebe. My hope is that one will be recessive pied, and then I will know that both parents are split for that. A normal with a rec. pied spot would also be helpful. Here are Colleen's two oldest. My how they have grown! #1: In keeping with my theory that the oldest is a girl, she seems to be getting white down! #2: I'm not so sure about this one being a boy, anymore, but I'm happy to wait and see. And to be proved wrong, whatever
January 13, 201015 yr Author Thank you, GB. When I checked them tonight, I was so excited to see a 5th little one in Colleen's nest, and then I realized, DOH! She had 5 last night!
January 14, 201015 yr Author New hatchling report: Colleen, 6 (only one left to go!) and Finnie, 4. Still none for Phoebe, but it's still not quite time. (If I say she still has a couple of days, that will make one appear today ) Here is a picture of Colleen's nest. They are starting to get so BIG. When I hold the older two, they stand there and flap their wings. They also walk around on my hand! White down is apparent of both of the older two, so, two girls, so far. Now to hope for yellow face. Yf2 sky blue opaline would be so pretty!
January 14, 201015 yr Author New hatchling report: Colleen, 6 (only one left to go!) and Finnie, 4. Still none for Phoebe, but it's still not quite time. (If I say she still has a couple of days, that will make one appear today ) I made one appear today!! I can't believe it! That's how it's been with all 3 hens, now! Those must be the magic words! I checked my records, and Phoebe's first egg was laid exactly 18 days ago. These hens must just like to sit from day one!
January 15, 201015 yr Wonderful news that everything is going smoothly and bubs are hatching out and being fed!
January 15, 201015 yr Author Thank you, Renee. Phoebe now has a second hatchling, so that's 2 in under 24 hours for her! Man, I love these pet type hens! I have started checking on the nests a 3rd time, in the middle of the day. Mostly because some of Colleen's are getting really big, and I want them to get used to being handled. Also because then my son can play with them a bit when he gets home from school. Last night my husband and one of my daughters came to view the nests during my evening check. They each held chick #1 for a while. I think my husband was a little bit impressed. I've noticed that Colleen's 1st two chicks are getting pin feathers on their wings. Next time I'm down there, I will have to see if I can get some photos that show them well. The first two definitely have white down and are girls. The 3rd still doesn't have enough down to tell, so jury is still out.
January 17, 201015 yr Author The IPS Driver error has been killing me today!!! I was so excited about Colleen's 7th and final egg hatching! I wanted to post, and tell Macka: "Guess what? None clear!! Yay!!" In this picture, I moved all the big ones out of the way, but you can still barely see #7: Now for some photos showing the feathers coming in on the older ones. The oldest: The second oldest: The third chick: Based on the white down on all 3 of these, I guess they are all girls. (I know the cere pics arent' that great, but the down will tell, with these parents.) Of the younger four, I have looked at the ceres and made guesses, but I won't post those until later, because my batting average here is only .500 The first four all have rings on them. I'm keeping an eye on Finnie's as to size, but her first isn't quite big enough for a ring yet. Finnie also had a new hatchling this morning, number 5 for her. You can see it at top right, with it's head butting the egg: (Phoebe still has two.)
January 17, 201015 yr The IPS Driver error has been killing me today!!! You had that too? I thought it was my internet being dickie! I almost got withdrawal symptoms from not being able to view HAHAHAH Congratulations on all your new arrivals! Your birds are doing wonderfully. I love checking here for all your regular updates I love seeing little ones - they are so cute. Well done awww i'm so happy for you with all your pinkies!
January 17, 201015 yr Author Thank you, Amy. I love it when I have something new happen. This is almost every day! I have my Mom and my sister-in-law following this, now, too. I thought I would like breeding budgies, but I didn't know if would be this fun!
January 18, 201015 yr Author Well, Finnie's 6th chick arrived this morning. By afternoon it was fed . She now just has 3 left to go. Phoebe also has 3 eggs left, but one was known to be clear. Since she skipped hatching one out yesterday, maybe #3 was the clear one. #4 is due tomorrow, so we'll see if she's back on schedule. I am now officially looking forward to not having any eggs left, and just having chicks! (It's kind of a relief now to check Colleen's box and know they have all hatched.) My fear now is that I will drop one. I am sooo careful. But sometimes they stick together. Once a note card fell to the floor and made a sound as I was lifting a chick, and my first thought was "OMGsh! There must have been a 2nd one stuck on!! NO!!! I was soooo relieved that it was a paper! Recovers from mini heart- attack...
January 19, 201015 yr Author I have now used 7 of my rings, 4 on Colleen's chicks and 3 on Finnie's. It's probably a good thing for one of Phoebe's eggs to be clear, because I have 21 eggs, but only 20 rings! But it doesn't take long to order more. Colleen's oldest is showing yellowface! She will be my first Yf2 opaline. Yay! Colleen's 4th chick also has white down. So far, 4 for 4, with 3 more left to grow. I'm hoping that Patrick will turn out to be split for opaline, because I would like a green opaline, too. It's cute now, because when I hold the older chicks, their little toes cling to my fingers like a real bird, and the try to climb upwards, all the while stretching and flapping their long wings!
January 19, 201015 yr I am so glad it is all going smoothly for you Finnie. It is a testament to your Breeding instincts and great care of your budgies
January 19, 201015 yr i think its time for so one on one budgie pics as in each baby (thats older nough of course )
January 19, 201015 yr Author I am so glad it is all going smoothly for you Finnie. It is a testament to your Breeding instincts and great care of your budgies  Thank you, Renee, although it's probably a testament to my OCD tendancies! i think its time for so one on one budgie pics as in each baby (thats older nough of course ) okay, GB. Will do that at this morning's check time. (Too bad that will be 1 am for you guys, so you'll have to wait until tomorrow to see them. )
January 19, 201015 yr Congrat on all your babies Finnie... You have been putting alot of working into your budgies and it shows... Thumbs up and I look forward to an updated...
January 19, 201015 yr Author Today's newest hatchling- Phoebe and Bailey's 3rd chick. It is right on schedule as if the 3rd egg didn't hatch but the 4th egg did. So I will expect egg #5 to hatch into baby #4 in two more days, and for the final egg to never hatch. (Does that make sense to anyone other than me?) My camera battery died after I snapped that hatchling. Fortunately, I had already got individual shots of Colleen's oldest four for GB first!! For your perusal, here is Chick #1, officially known as CS#1 until I name her. CS#2: CS#3: And CS#4: Don't worry about their legs in the photo op box, they are not sliding around like that at home in their nest box. Not having ever seen any grey down yet, I have nothing to compare to. (Even Finnie's oldest chick looks like it is getting white down. ) Today I thought CS#1's down was looking less sparkling white, and am thinking maybe I misjudged her, or else maybe she's getting a little dirty. If any of you with more experienced eyes have any observations you would like to make, it could help me to learn how to pick out different things. Thanks, Finnie
January 20, 201015 yr Author um i think the first chick is going to be yf sky blue ??? lol thats all i got HA HA! GB can you tell that by looking, or did you go back and look at the parents? LOL (To save anyone else from going back, both parents are sky blue, the hen is Yf2 and the cock is opaline. ) They are cute! Hope there's more pics coming. Yes, I'll do more pics. Finnie's should start getting pins soon.
