February 12, 201015 yr Author They are all cute. Are you keeping them? The plan is to sell them. There are no budgie breeders in my area, so I thought I might fill a niche. However, if I'm not able to sell them, I will keep them. But that would curtail future breeding plans, because there are 17 chicks, and that is a lot to add to my flock! I hadn't thought they would be this prolific!

February 14, 201015 yr Ohhh Finne!!!! wow they are gorgeous little ones - I'll have the spangles thanks hahaha Edited February 14, 201015 yr by Amy S
February 16, 201015 yr Author Newest updates Colleen has laid 1 egg off the perch in her "spa". She keeps having egg-size poops, but hasn't laid another egg as scheduled, so hopefully she's done. Yesterday I found a half of a broken egg in Finnie's nest box. I'm sure it didn't have a chance with six fledgeling size babies in there. So I pushed each of the six out of the nest, and blocked the hole. After a bit, I went back and reopened the hole, to see if they would go back in, and as of bedtime, they hadn't gone back in. But, Finnie has laid a new egg in there. I'm hoping she will just keep the old babies from going back in, but not attack them. In the meantime, I am working on getting a kindy cage ready for them. As soon as it looks like they can eat on their own, I will move them over to it. Here's a shot of the half dozen: In Phoebe's clutch, one has ventured out so far, but has gone back in. He looks suspiciously like a clear flighted pied to me, as opposed to a dominant pied, so I will be doing some reading up on the differences, and also try to get some photos of this guy. It's rather difficult to feed and change newspapers in these breeding cabinets without a baby getting loose. Believe me, of the three that have gotten out so far, they can really fly well! I would be extremely paranoid if I were trying to breed outdoors! It puts having a safety door in a whole new light.

February 17, 201015 yr Author very well done whats it feel like to have raised your beautiful bubys with all thoughs wonderful genetic suprizes good isnt it i love the pets for that reason and the shows for a challange I must say, the genetic surprises are a lot of fun! I couldn't believe that I got greywing babies in all three of these nests! And it's hard to believe that round one is basically done, and we are now transitioning to round two. Finnie's babies did keep going back into her box, today, so I have already moved them into their own cage. Which is not without it's drawbacks. I need to keep a close eye on making sure they can eat on their own. If not, I may have to move Patrick back and forth between the two cages. Here are some pictures of Finnie's chicks in their new cage:
February 23, 201015 yr Author Breeding journal update: Finnie and Patrick's chicks are doing well on their own. Judging by the amount of empty husks that have been gathering, I think they are eating okay. They also eat their vegetables, which is a good thing. The pellets seem to remain untouched. Finnie and Patrick themselves are forging ahead. They now have 4 eggs, and Finnie is sitting. I expect these to start hatching around March 9. Phoebe and Bailey's chicks have finally started to come out of the box, but they go back in a lot. The big babies! I've moved Sean and Colleen's clan to a bigger cage, and Sean is still with them. Colleen is still at the spa, and she is going through quite a moult, very pinny. Here's a photo of Phoebe, Bailey, and some of their brood: I was going to start discussing on here what the mutations of this nest are, but I think I will go over to the colors and mutations forum, and do a separate topic for this.
March 6, 201015 yr Author I can tell that my second round of eggs/chicks is not getting the press that my first round did! I don't seem to be posting new pictures for each new egg as it is laid. Finnie now has eight eggs, and one has hatched! (So I guess that really means 7 eggs and one chick.) As for Phoebe and Bailey, I was going to let them go a second round, too, to keep Finnie and Patrick company. (In case I needed fosters.) But by the time Finnie had 8 eggs, Phoebe still hadn't laid any. Then I got the idea to swap my pairs around so that I can test breed Phoebe to a normal and Bailey to a normal. So Finnie and Patrick will just have to do their best. They are my only pair breeding this time around. That is probably a good thing. I'm getting too many birds down in my basement, and the dust is starting to permeate the non-bird areas. I've sold one baby, and one of my older hens. It's a start. Tomorrow I am taking 13 of the babies and another older bird to a bird fair, so hopefully I will sell a lot more. I've got to make room for 8 new chicks! My two test pairs will not be put down to breed until I feel that I have been able to sell enough birds. If I find I have no market, it makes no sense for me to keep breeding more than I can keep myself. But it certainly has been a fun adventure! I'll try to keep up with current developments and photos as Finnie and Patrick's second round progresses.
March 8, 201015 yr Where are you? If you're near me I could buy one. Ratzy you are in Australia and if you read Finnies profile left of post you will see they are in USA. Besides you are saying you have to sell yours Edited March 8, 201015 yr by KAZ
March 8, 201015 yr Oh bother. I didn't realize. We might be keeping one and if they were in my area I could get a mate for it. Mum loves violets and wants to keep them, but......dad isn't budging.
March 11, 201015 yr Author Finnie and Patrick have two chicks so far. The third was due yesterday, but didn't arrive, so I candled, and it looks like there are 2 or 3 clear eggs. Since it has been over a week since the last egg was laid, I can assume those clear eggs will stay clear. So I will expect egg #4 to hatch tomorrow, and I will also be expecting another miss down the road a bit. We're having an early taste of spring here, and I am starting to get busy with outdoor work. So it will be hit or miss with me getting onto the forum. But I will try to come on and post updates if anything interesting happens.
March 12, 201015 yr 11 is a lot of eggs for one hen. You have 3 hens with 6, 4 and 1 respectively. That is not that many. I am not sure the egg laying has stopped there. You should expect more. I only have show birds and one has layed 7 eggs so far, so expect more from the pet types. Well, I hope Finnie and Phoebe have more, but I don't want Colleen to overdo it. It would be nice if she stops soon Do you have any picture's of the young from this discussion, i would love to see what you ended up with. Lib
March 12, 201015 yr What a great mixed bag of babies in such nice colours and varieties! It's so exciting when unexpecteds pop out of the breeding! Did you know or suspect that you had so much greywing in your birds?
