Hi all,

my budgie has hurt its foot, and im unsure of what to do

 

he was flying around the room and must of landed badly, as when i picked him up he was reluctant to use one of his feet

i have been watching him closely hoping for improvement, but it has now been 3

days and no improvement?

what should i do, is there anyway i can help him, or do i just have to wait for the natural healing process to take place and wait for his recovery?

 

he is able to move from perch to perch, but once on the perch solely uses one foot to balance whilst the other foot is suspended just above the perch with no pressure on it.

he can move it and use it i have seen him climb with it on the side of the cage, but will then not put pressure on it when standing?

is it broken or just sore?

will he get better

 

i am so worried i only got him last week =[

please help me someone, thanyou

If he is using it all around the cage and raises it for perching, that is normal practice for a budgie at rest. They tuck a foot up when resting on the perch....most budgies do.

but he is does not always use it when he is climbing only when it is necessaary, and today i seen him hoping on the bottom of the cage with one foot the other foot curled and suspended

he can move his toes but refuses to stand on it or walk on it?

 

is it broken or just injured slightly

will it heal by itself?

Hi, I've just had one recover from a broken leg. I used a drinking straw cut to size and taped over break. I left it about 9 days. He then would perch with the bad leg out behind but not use it, his foot didn't work to grip etc. but he rested on his leg for a few days, climbed with his beak and good foot, so decided to put him back in aviary, it's been 16 days now and to-day he's been griping with his foot as normal . (I thought he may have damaged the nerves). He's back to normal now with no after effects that I can see.

I'd say your's may have bruised or even broken little bones in his foot. It sounds like his will just heal itself over a few days. Let him rest in cage not fly around and see how he goes, mine had no reflex in his foot at all for nearly 2 weeks but he's fine now. Hope this helps. :grbud:

now i am certain it will heal, i just have to be patient

should i still handle him, like let him perch on my finger and shoulder

as he is fresh from the pet shop and i need him to get use to me?

 

or should i wait for his foot to fully heal it has been 5 days now?

thanks for the advice, it was really helpful, i used this method and just scrathed his chest

so he knew i was still a friendly figure

and guess what ....

 

this morning i woke up too find him fully using his foot =]

i was so releived

and he is not hopping anymore walks on both feet

which is excellent

Glad to hear your bird has recovered well, it's a bit daunting trying to help them. I think common sense goes a long way, I've been "off air" for a few days and just caught up. Glad you had a good result.
