Posted December 13, 200915 yr My female budgie, Marigold, has been acting strangely. I put her in a box with her mate to carry them inside. She has been holding her wings out and her body pressed against the bottom with her tail up. She is not fluffed up or anything, though. What is she doing, has anyone elses budgie done this?
December 13, 200915 yr Author Maybe, but she doesn't look stressed, she's doing it again. She isn't panting or anything and it is not that warm. There is some paper in the box and she is ripping it up! She is now trying to chew the box! Huh?

December 13, 200915 yr Author No, she can come out if she wants to and I was worried so I didn't move her.
December 13, 200915 yr Author Okay, I'll try. If she starts doing it again anyway. Edited December 13, 200915 yr by Ratzy

If she is not hot or stressed I would venture that she is adopting the "mating" position - back arched and tail in the air .... plus the chewing - it sounds like she wants a bit of hanky panky
December 13, 200915 yr This also is what hens do when they are about to lay an egg. You say its your female and she has a mate. Why did you move them from outside to inside in a box ? Were they in an aviary or a breeding cage outside ? Where are they meant to be when you moved them inside ? Are they breeding ? Is it likely she is about to lay an egg ? If so why are they being moved about all over the place ? Edited December 13, 200915 yr by KAZ

They are in a cage outside but i am not breeding until next year during the school holidays ( when I can be there 24/7.) I took them in because I have a kind of play gym inside and they play on it from time to time. As for the box a friend told me not to grab them and that way I don't have to. I'm getting rid of the box!

I'm getting rid of the box! Hi Ratsy, Is your outside cage big enough to put your playgym inside it, so they can use it anytime? I think you should either have them outside permanently or inside, not try to have them moving from one place to the other, you could end up losing your birds this way. Decide if you want them as inside pets or aviary birds that you enjoy outside and breed from them later on. Did you get any more birds yet? You said you were thinking of getting another one or two? Maybe they would be a great Christmas present.
December 18, 200915 yr Author Yeah, maybe I'll just keep them outside. I haven't got around to getting another bird or 2 but I think I will.
