Can anyone help me with this???? The legs don't seem splayed......should I be concerned??

Legs are not out the side but out in front......is this still classed as splayed??

Looks like its just going through the lanky stage. Once it can lift its own weight the legs wont look as odd.

Kind of hard to tell at the moment. The legs are right under the body, so there is no need to do a sponge.

The legs do look long.

I would give this baby some time and see how it develops.

Keep us update regularly and feedback or opinions will be provided.

I do not see any major probs at the moment, but we will see what develops. Once the bird gets a bit stronger and has the ability and strength to support it's own body weight, then you can make a judgement on what to do, based on how it appears at that point in time.

I had a couple of chicks like this this year, both from the same hen. ^_^

In the first instance I didn't do anything believing there was nothing much I could do and the little chap has gone on to thrive - albeit with a wonky leg. The second time around I recognized that probably the way the hen was sitting had something to do with it and I fostered the chick to another nest and the leg issue corrected itself within the week.

I have since come to the realization that the hen tends to place her keel bone just on the hip and this is what cause the little leg to splay outwards.

Thanks everyone for your advice....

Renee....would you suggest me fostering the chick to another nest, which I have never yet done but am able to do?

The chick this morning seems to be the same...

I have a chick at the moment exactly the same. I have chosen to beef up the calcium to the parents. I do see that the hen sits tight too.

I have one too , He has one leg out in front and the hip joint is red so I would say splayed. I doses parents with calcium but didn't work, the little fella is 7 weeks now and still the same all he does is lie on the floor all the time and occasional prop himself up against the wire. Greg seems to think he will learn to use his leg but I think NOT and being a cock that means he is useless. BUt he is a sweet little thing.

I KNOW ONE THING I AM NEVER GO TO BREED THIS TIME OF THE YEAR EVER AGAIN AS I AM GETTING ALL SORTS OF PROBLEMS. I HAVE FINISHED NOW BUT NORMALLY I HAVE FINISHED BY MIDDLE OF NOVEMBER BEFORE IT GETS TOO HOT.
