I would like to get my budgie max a friend but would love to have a cockatiel also, is it possible to put them together? and whats the best way of going about it? and does anyone have a good website of cages where they are not that expensive please?

Thankyooou.

You can put budgies and cockatiels together. Only the cockatiel might be a bit aggressive at first. I don't really know any site with cheap cages but do you have a school fate or junk sale near you? There may be an old birdcage there. Put them in cages side by side and take one step at a time.

I suppose it all depends on what you want to spend. What is your budget like? You can buy a good cage off e-bay for about $180, whihc is about 90 pound or so.

The cage you would need is a big cage to allow each bird to have room to move around and not be cramped, especially since the cocaktiel is much bigger.

I am not big on putting different species together with budgies, but I know that cockatiels can be caged with budgies. I would suggest if you are going to do this, get a cockatiel that is young and hand tame it. Eventually the young cockatiel will be tame enough to put with the budgie, and if all goes well, it will lose it's tameness with you and will bond with your budgie. This whole process will be much easier to achieve with a young budgie.

I would also suggest you quarantine the cockatiel for 30 days, then you slowly introduce the birds tp each other in seperate cages, while you hand tame the cockatiel. Then you introduce them to their new cage together. Do not let one have it first, as this will result in one bird feeling there is ownership of the cage, and causing more problems.

I am sure if you do a search on here, someone would also have faced this dilemma, so you can find out more info there.

I agree with Dave's advice

Also, personally i have never had any troubles with budgies and cockatiels living together, and I have had both for over 16 years

Oooo thankyou ;) im so excited. but i only have two cages, and i cant afford to buy another one. so one is going to have to have the bigger cage first, will this be a big problem?

That could be a problem so make sure when you put them together you move things around inside the cage and move it to a different spot. Take the bird inside the cage they're going to live in, move things around and pop them both in.

Personally I would not house them together but I would let them mingle together outside of their cages. This is my personal opinion. Any bird can act up when they are going through a molt or a hormonal stage.

You have asked about putting them together but what I didn't see is the question on females or males, personally I would do males vs 2 females as in any species (including ours lol) females can tend to get bossy and persnickey (saying it nicely) and you don't want a larger female bossing the smaller bird around. Again my opinion.

We have in our FAQ section a whole section on cages, e-bay is really a good place to go just make sure the seller has been in business for awhile, has a lot of sales with GOOD reviews. My cage is pictures in the FAQ and I got it for 99.00 it can house 6 budgies easily or 2 tiels where they have a good amount of room.

Getting a younger tiel is a good idea but again make sure the sex (tiels can't always be visually sexed especially the lutino and pied varieties) but be careful the budgie is not bossy at first.

30 day quarantine is recommended 60 days the avian vets will tell you.

If you have a good bond with Max already you won't loose too much of it if you continue to consistantly working on bonding and being with your birds. Tiels tame very easily as babies.

I would not put them together in a cage but that is me.

Right now l only have a cockatiel but in a few days, l will be getting a young handtamed budgie. After quarantine, l plan on having them in separate cages but l will let them play with each other when l can supervise them. So just in case one acts up. l can stop them from fighting one another.
