Posted December 1, 200915 yr Hello, I'm Beth, and new to the forum. My budgie is George. She (we think) is a yellow/green Budgie. The rest of our family consists of 1 other human, 1 bearded dragon, 2 golden retrievers, 2 dwarf lop bunnies. One new years eve, I was delivering to an RSL club, and the gardener found a budgie in the garden bed. We tried to let it go, and it flew into a glass wall. It's cere was all scabby and bleeding, and there wasn't really anywhere more open to let it go, and no vets were open so I took it home to recover for the night then tried to let it go again the next day. It seemed really tame, and wanted to stick around, so we bought a flight cage and it seemed happy enough. The cere has always remained a bit scabby looking, but it seems brown under the scab, so we think George is a girl. Then we decided it would probably be lonely, so bought Fred (a male). Well they seemed happy for the past 2 years, but Fred died on Saturday(we're not sure why), and now George seems lonely. She chirps all the time (much more than she ever has before) Fred used to be the more noisy one. We're looking at a few options- finding her a home with other budgies, buying another budgie for her, or my husband would like a cockatiel, but opionions seem to be divded on housing budgies and cockatiels together. I'd really like some of your opinions on what you think would be best for George. If this is posted in the wrong area, just let me know and I can post it elsewhere. Thanks guys!
December 1, 200915 yr Hello and welcome. Budgies do mourn their lost for a little while, but she will get used to being alone if you can be her companion instead. But It's up to you in what you want to do with George. If you think she would be happy with another mate, then get her one ( but give 30 days minimum quarantine) before introducing them. If you would prefer her to live in an aviary with lots of other budgies, then i am sure finding her a new home wont be hard. So it really depends on what you want

Hi, Welcome to the club. Your remaining bird is probably calling to Fred because she? doesn't know where he's gone. Others could tell you about housing her with a cockatiel, but if you buy one or the other you should quarantine any new bird before placing them in with her. A picture would help others tell you if she? is indeed a she.
December 2, 200915 yr Hi, welcome I'm sorry about your budgie Fred. You are right about cockatiels and budgies. It is highly recommended not to put them together in a cage. If you have the room, you could house the cockatiel in a separate cage. Like the other posts have mentioned. What ever bird you choose. They need to be Quarantined. It is very important. December 2, 200915 yr Pretty died after a year of being together with Merlin. Merlin called for him but in the end which is now 2 years later he remains a single bird and he is doing fine. He is so tamed and talks it is wonderful. Would he love to have another companion I am sure he wouldn't refuse it but is he unhappy I don't believe so. He sits in his cage right by me when I am on my computer and comes out here and there when I put away my dogs and cats. Getting another bird is up to you but I advise same species if you want to house them together and same sex if you don't want any accidental breeding.
December 2, 200915 yr Recently my Cosmo was taken away for 3 days because he went to the vet, and my other budgie Piccolo went a bit nuts while he was away, calling out and running around the cage. Cosmo doesn't care if we have Piccolo or not though - he is far more bonded to people. So maybe if you wait a little while you will see if she starts to feel better - but at the very least if you buy a new one you will have to keep them separate for 30 days anyway, so she will have to be on her own for a while. On another note... it's a good thing you didn't let George go again. Budgies don't survive in the wild unless they were from the wild to begin with, so if you ever find another budgie try and find its owner or give it a new home rather than let it go
December 3, 200915 yr Author Thanks for the feedback. We've bought George a mirror for now. It's taken her a few days to even move around the cage much- she just sits in a corner, moves to eat then goes back to the corner. But finally this morning she is looking into the mirror talking to herself (or calling to Fred). But at least she's shown interest in something. We've refined the choices. We're looking at either getting a cockatiel to keep in a separate cage next to her, so they both have company without being too close company. Or a hand raised budgie - my husband really wants a tame bird, and despite all his efforts with Fred and George it didn't happen. I'm pushing for the budgie, but in the end it's his bird to make the final decision. We're hopefully going to a bird farm this weekend to have a chat to them and see whats about.
