I Saw A Bird In My Backyard That I Don't Know!

I saw a bird that I really want to know what it is. I've never seen anything like it.

It was a small bird, but I can't say how small as I was pretty far away.. but it was moving very quickly and seemed to be banging something with its beak so I think it catches grubs or something..

It was a pale brown colour all over, but its wings were bright blue. Its tail moved quite a bit too... flicking up and down.

I'm in North Brisbane..... any ideas??

Sounds like a scrub wren but I would have to consult my books to be sure.

Hmmmm intriguing.. I looked it up on google images and I don't think so. It only had blue wings, not its head... the body was brown. I might try drawing it later.

The thing about wrens though is that in breeding condition the males change colours. In WA we have the splendid wren and in breeding condition it is almost entirely blue but non breeding it is very much like the hen.

Oh maybe it could be.... I think it had a beak more like a kingfisher though but it was small... maybe not as small as a wren but it did have that wren-like tail bob thing going.

:)

HI Krosp......maybe a kingfisher??, I'm in Brissie and I found one in my front yard....

my first thought was a kingfisher, but you seem to know about that bird plus i think they are blue all over (heads as well)

was the beak black or coloured?

The beak wasn't close enough to see in detail but I think maybe grey/black/brown... definitely not a colour though

Yeah the weird thing was the wings were blue but not the head or anywhere else. I hope I see it again, but it flits around so fast I don't think I'll get a photo :)

Maybe a non-breeding splendid fairy wren? I dunno, my grandad's a birder, I could ask him. That's the only one I can see in the bird book, but I'm not sure that you get them in your area. It won't be a kingfisher, there is 10 species and only 3 don't have blue-green heads.
