Just wondering what type of wood people use, what netting, what paint etc, and where you get it all from, when you build avieries? I have been reading old posts in the forum, but I can't see any that say specifically what materials were used, just that they used 'non-toxic' paint or something general like that. I don't really know what paints are non-toxic and which are toxic, so if anyone could give me some specific names of paints and type of wood etc, that would be appreciated.

i used untreated pine for my frames and my main rafter bearing

i also used red gum it will need replacing however but so far i have kept my birds amused so no probs with them eating it all away

as for paint sorry hon cant help odiously a nontoxic none lead based one no oil either i would assume

i left the paint to my dad so

Use untreated wood in the areas the birds can access or chew on, or you can use treated wood if it can not be accessed by the birds. Treated wood is better to use if the wood will be touching the ground etc to stop rot and termites. treated wood is toxic so ensure the birds can not chew it.

Use aviary wire from the hardware store. You can get it in rolls or by the meter depending on where you shop. Zink aviary wire (the norm) needs to be washed before use with vinegar and scrubbed to ensure birds don't get zink poisoning.

Use acrylic paints only. Oil or enamel paints are toxic.

Metal framing is better as budgies chew wood. BUT not everyone can work with metal framing so we do what we can.

Any paint deemed safe for babies would be safe for birds I expect. That does NOT include ALL acrylic paints. Just because a paint is acrylic or water based doesnt necessarily make it safe for birds.

You buy paints deemed child or baby safe. But if your framework is external and mesh internal so the birds cannot chew the wood, it wont matter.

Yeah, agree with Kaz, there are mulitple topics on members aviaries. Use the search function or just look through the forum section.
