January 18, 201015 yr Author 42 degrees Celcius so far Thats 107.6 degrees fahrenheit Yep, just checked the thermometer under the vaerandah ... 42C here as well .... Auuuuugh! Well the temperature has peaked for the day, currently sitting on 40C and the Freo Doctor has arrived (local sea breeze) The adults are still pretty quiet but the young uns have perked up and are very chatty. Here's some photos comparing how they were faring- Adults (almost all on the floor): Young Uns (getting up and looking chirpy): Edited January 18, 201015 yr by renee
January 18, 201015 yr Temperature guage in my flights says 46 degrees All birds good....a lot on perches not all on the floor. More large icechunks put in drinkers and large baths added for splashing of water. WOW. 46 degrees! I was panicking when it got to 37 in my aviary! I did notice that none were on the ground, even though I had water dishes on the ground for them, they were all sitting on the perches near the cooler with wings out. What can the little guys cope with?

When it gets really hot for them they go to ground and sit there panting ... the danger sign is if they lie prostrate on the floor with their wings out IF you see this it is EMERGENCY time. Sometimes they can pick themselves up with no extra bother when it cools down BUT you need to be aware that the prostrate look is NOT a good one and if I see it I intervene pretty darn smartly. wow, you guys are doing it tough.Does this weather happen every year? When I was over there last summer it was 42-44 degrees. Is this a normal thing for Perth? Fresh from the Perth Weather website: Perth is experiencing the warmest summer on record with a average maximum temperature of 31.6C so far - on par with the summers of 1931 - 1932 and 1977 - 1978. Perth's average summer maximum temperature is normally 30.2C. Edited January 18, 201015 yr by renee
January 18, 201015 yr when i get a bird in the prostrate position as started by ren i grab him/her up and bucket of tap temp water and dunk her / him straight in just a quick dunk not the head dont want to give heart atack then into a cage alone in doors for few days rest with added cool veg and much extra lovey dovey talk i only had it once the bird in question was quiet stressed and usto a aconned clossed breeding room shes now fine flying with others but will be mindful of the conditions my birds come from when looking in on them durring hot days
January 18, 201015 yr Thanks for that Renee, I will keep an eye out for that when our next heat wave hits! The worst I noticed was a young hen lying on the wire that the water sits on. She didn't have her wings out, just seemed to be lying next to the water! I did a bit of a panic and misted her with a cool spray. She perked up straight away & looked at me as if to say "what the *** was THAT for"! I left her alone after that! I think they have figured out that if they sit on the ladder near the cooler it blows cool air on them. They seem to sit there for a few minutes then go to the back corner of the aviary & just sit quietly.
January 18, 201015 yr All birds on the ground Adults Babies Havent scraped and vacuumed the floor in there for a few days as its been too hot to bother the birds. The chick from the box of Big Blue feeling the heat a bit
January 18, 201015 yr Author I don't know if I heard it right ... but I did see the pictures ... The evening's news: 2C in Halls Creek this morning and SNOWING! Edited January 18, 201015 yr by renee
January 18, 201015 yr I had a bird collapse in the kindy cage once, whilst I was standing there. I bought it inside, put in a small cage, sat it on some paper towel in the cage. I gave it a spray with some water, and the paper towel absorbed some water so it was laying on a cool surface. I made sure there was a fan in the room, keeping the air cool, but not blowing on the bird directly. This bird has only ever had the one heat fit, if it was that, and is a brilliant looking bird. One of my best bred. A grey opaline cock if you are wondering - there is a picture of him in my new aviary shots (wattle flights) today.
January 18, 201015 yr Got home from work and went straight out to the aviary expecting the worst. Well all was good. Before heading of to work this morning I put a potplant saucer on the flight floor this morning and filled it full. Refilled all drinkers with cool water and relocated the smaller cage to the aviary floor and put a saucer in their too. All drinker waters were warm but the big saucer was quite cool. Like nubbs said Coolgardie safe effect. Putting ice blocks in drinkers or freezing the guinea pigs bottles is fine if ya home to add more but having to be away all day they would soon melt and when needed at the hottest part of the day it just would not be there. Having no timer system means the plants suffer too. Came home today and all the silverbeet has wilted. So quick on with the spinklers. Perth summer weather is always hot. Jan and Feb being our hottest months. Renee send the Freo Doc over to the hills will ya mate. I live at the base of the hills and it is always hotter here and the Freo Doctor doesn't always come this far inland. Temp in my loungeroon currently at 1802 hrs is showing 37.5 C.

January 19, 201015 yr Author Another hot day today 39.2C 5mins ago. I hope it has peaked for the day and doesn't go any higher. Can't wait for a break in the weather!
January 19, 201015 yr Just watched channel 9 and it said the weather was 40.8c soooo hot for our animals. I have been wetting towels, freezing them and pegging them onto one part of each cage and each roof today. Each time I go and check, the budgies are sitting practically on top of each other to cool themselves.
January 19, 201015 yr I have put a sprinkler system in the end of the aviary will have further modifications as necessary Edited January 19, 201015 yr by KAZ

This is due to higher than normal temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. Edited January 19, 201015 yr by renee
January 19, 201015 yr I have put a sprinkler system in the end of the aviary This extended part is nice, Kaz, so you don't have to worry about getting your concrete floor wet.
January 19, 201015 yr I have put a sprinkler system in the end of the aviary This extended part is nice, Kaz, so you don't have to worry about getting your concrete floor wet. Some of it gets wet depending on how hard I turn the sprinklers on but it dries up real fast in this heat
January 19, 201015 yr Well I was out in Coorow today backlining sheep, drove on through to Carnamah this arvo and it was 47 degrees. I almost passed out when getting out of the car to go talk to some clients instore. I was only glad that it was not ever going to be as hot as that some 500km away at home. Rang home tonight and all is well in Nubbly-budgie-land. All going well absolutely no losses and another 2 hatchee's today.
January 19, 201015 yr Better weather today.........so far overcast/cloudy with max temperature meant to be 31 degrees C I know this is , however, what is "backlining" sheep?I am sure Nubbly will correct me if I am wrong, but my understanding is backlining is chemically treating sheep for lice generally around the same time they are shorn.

January 20, 201015 yr I have been wetting towels, freezing them and pegging them onto one part of each cage and each roof today. That is a really good tip - would never have thought of it! Thanks, I find it works really well as the breeze, no matter how warm it is, goes through the frozen towel and cools the air behind. I have also just placed some frozen cooler containers behind the towel but in front of the mesh for extra coolness. I made some dodgy little container holders out of some wire today. They seem to be holding okay. They LOOK bad but if they work, I don't care haahah. Kaz, I love the sprinkler setup at the open end of your aviary. The birds look very happy Nubbly, glad you haven't had any losses Edited January 20, 201015 yr by Amy S

January 20, 201015 yr I am lucky enough to have most of my aviaries in full shade at the hottest part of the day, but being in Northern Victoria my birds still feel it, we are getting one hot day after another here. I have shifted all of my breeding cages over to the dairy as it seems to be about 5 degrees cooler over in the big shed than it does at the house. The only problem that seems to be occurring due to the heat is the fact that it is literally cooking my eggs . We have had days of 46+ here and even in the shade the birds still get way to hot, I have opted for the sprinkler on the roof of the aviaries now just to try cool it down for them. I had 2 hens due to hatch 3 days ago and after the day of 47 I have just been out and they are all dead in the shell .If we keep getting these hot days I am going to put all my birds out and rest them until after the summer heat.
