January 13, 201015 yr Author I had no idea the temperature had such great oscillations over there in Victoria ... nightmare! Your birds come through okay.
January 17, 201015 yr Another hot day in Perth Western Australia. The birds in the flights had drunk all their water by 11am. They now have double the amount of fresh water in the large drinkers and extra bowls of water to paddle through and bathe in. Even the cage drinkers water felt warm to the touch. Noone but noone can convince me icecubes arent a good way to go. Edited January 17, 201015 yr by KAZ
January 17, 201015 yr Author Yes, it really is a scorcher today. We are taking refuge inside the air conditioned house but the birds are stuck outside ... it is on days like these that I picture a state of the art facility with air con for my little darlings Ice cubes in drinkers, sprinkler system on .... now we have to wait and see. I can hear the young uns carrying on so at least that is a good sign.
January 17, 201015 yr Gotta agree with the ice cubes Kaz! I went throught nearly 12 trays of 12 in the cooler on Monday when it reached 48 here. It still got up to 38 in the aviary but I reckon that was pretty good considering how damn hot it was! I didn't lose any birds over our heat wave & today they are like GB, we have gone from over 40 for the last 2 weeks to 29 today! Time for a jumper I think!

January 17, 201015 yr It was hot all right here is WA. I lost two hens and two other birds arn't lloking so good. Quick dunk into some cool water and drip water into beak. Cross fingers. it is 1838 hrs here and in my loungeroom it is 34.5 C as my aircon is not working. My timer system for the sprinklers dies this morning so I have to hand water. Back to work tomorrow so I hope we don't get to hot during the week as no one is home to do anything should things go pear shaped.

Jeeze RIP, that's no good, sorry to hear about your losses ... and unfortunately tomorrow is forecast to hit 39C
January 17, 201015 yr wow, you guys are doing it tough. Does this weather happen every year? When I was over there last summer it was 42-44 degrees. Is this a normal thing for Perth?
January 17, 201015 yr Near on 7:30 and the temperature in the flights is 37 degrees celcius. All happy and chirpy though, Sorry to hear about the deaths RIP wow, you guys are doing it tough.Does this weather happen every year? When I was over there last summer it was 42-44 degrees. Is this a normal thing for Perth?I remember one summer once getting to 46 and 47 degrees.
January 17, 201015 yr Its been terribly hot here too. We've not even had the slightest hint of a breeze. I've been out four times today to check on my birds and give them a spray and some more ice in their water. They all like the ground at the moment, and their vegie plate - must be nice and cool for them. I thought Mrs Santa had passed as she was lying on the ground, but she had made a sand "nest" on the ground to keep cool. I'm sorry for your losses RIP Its not nice weather for our poor feathered friends. I hope you don't have any more losses. Dave, its always horrible and hot in the summer here, i'd be much happier if the temp got no higher than 30c Sadly that only happens in Autumn, Winter and Spring.

We can only hope that we get a peak and then it cools off for a bit before peaking again .... if we get a run of scorchers one after the other it really gets difficult.

January 17, 201015 yr The two birds I had to wet down seem to have made it through, barely. Both are eating and perching tonight. Hope tomorrow doesn't become their undoing. It is 2127 hrs currently and it is still 32.3 C in my lounge room. Aircon don't get fixed till Tuesday. I have been sleeping in my swag on the lounge room floor as this is the coolest place during the night if a breeze comes through the window. I might just pull the breeders tomorrow as not eggs are laid to worry about and place them in the other flight. I am trying to rig up something to get them though tomorrow. Although the containers are full it is so hot that the water in them gets to hot to drink. I need a larger container so water does not heat up during day.

January 17, 201015 yr Very normal unfortunately. It was 34 degrees here at 7pm sheesh. Then at 9pm it was 25 so the lights and the cooler went off. It was actually pretty nice in the breeding room but the birds in the aviary went ot ground and stayed there until evening. No losses and chickies hatching with no problems thankfully. I was having trouble keeping the cooler filled as the hose poked in thingo was a good idea but running pump & bore means that i couldn't get the tap to run slow enough as to overfill the thing without it stopping all together. Sooooo we had to replace the d troughs in the dog runs so we pillaged the little float system out of one of the old ones and installed it into the water cooler. Bingo - power on water on and the thing stays half full indefinitely. Nipple drinker system is working a treat and it seems that, even though the lines might be at 40-whatever degrees it is, the little drips hanging off the nipple fittings have a great Coolgardie Safe effect. Hopefully all goes smoothly today whilst we are both out for work.
January 17, 201015 yr I have to say that Sydney weather is usually good. We do nto get the cold nights that much, nor the really hot days. Occassionally we have a really hot day, but 35-36 degrees it usually it. one day a summer it will get above 40, but that is unusual.
January 18, 201015 yr Author Well it is 10am and the mercury is on the rise ... currently 31C in the shade. :sadsorry: Drinkers are done, fresh seed supplied and sprinkler will be going on as it approaches 35C. No fatalities yesterday :hap: Yes, they went to ground and looked more like drowned rats than show budgies but when the temperature dropped a bit they were all back on the perches and chirping away.
January 18, 201015 yr A very hot dry easterly wind of sorts down at the aviary and breeding room complex right now although the breeding room is always cooler. I froze full cups of water last night into large iceblocks and have put one or two in each of the large drinkers and can replace through the day as the drinkers water ends up somewhere between lukewarm and warm during the day without it.
January 18, 201015 yr 42 degrees Celcius so far :sadsorry: Thats 107.6 degrees fahrenheit Edited January 18, 201015 yr by KAZ
