Help With Baby Budgies

Hi Every one,

I have a hen that has laid 6 eggs, I have been on egg watch as the first egg was due to hatch.

This morning when I woke and went to check on my 'babies' I found a hatchling at the bottom of the cage in the tray. It was cold and still attached to the eggshell, I placed it back into the nesting box and kept a close eye on the cage. Later I noticed that the hen has busted an egg and thrown it out of the nesting box. She had not fed the hatchling at this stage, so I have taken all the remaining eggs out of the cage and the hatchling too. They are now in a 'box' with a lamp and some woodshavings. I have fed the hatchling twice with handrearing food from the pet shop, my concern is I am not sure if the crop is full enough. Any advice would be great thanks. Sara.

Not everyone who has this kind of experience is ON at the time you may need help. When you posted this maybe noone who handraises was on and your topic slips down. I understand your frustration but sarcasm is no way to get help either :)

The lamp idea for incubating eggs wont help as eggs need to be turned and under a warm mother. Looks like your budgie mum doesnt want to continue and maybe thats why she threw the eggs out. If a chick hatches too soon or is out of the egg too soon they will die. What does the chick look like that "hatched" ? Is its belly off colour ?

More info will help us to help you.

If you do not receive the response you need quickly, try doing a search. Many before you have faced the same dilemas and you will be able to read up on their experiences and relate it back to your own situation. :)
