Posted October 15, 200915 yr Hi Everyone, My name is Amy and I love budgies and breeding them. I have 3 at the moment - I've recently given most of my budgies away and am trying a few different breeding pairs. Im going to get another male - hopefully a violet as my neighbour has so many different colours and varieties. When I was younger my whole family used to breed budgies - and we ended up with so many different colours/varieties - spangles, opalines, greywings. I think there may have been a few lace wings and we even got a few albinos which was surprising. We weren't actively trying to get colours or anything. But when pairs partnered up, we set them up in breeding boxes and they went really well. Anyway, just thought i'd share a bit of info about myself. Hopefully I will get some marvelous information and help from this website Thanks for reading Amy
October 15, 200915 yr Author Thank you I hope to learn many many things from this website. And when I build my flock up, i'd like to start properly breeding certain colours. Well actually I think i'd like to build a flock of clearwings as i think they are so beautiful.
October 16, 200915 yr Hi Amy, Welcome, you will certainly be able to find out anything to do with Budgies here. Great site and very knowledgeable people to help you through any problem.
November 8, 200915 yr Author Thank you everyone for your welcoming. I haven't been online lately as I recently got married. I'm back now and I have pictures of my budgies plus two new additions I got today. I shall put them up soon. I'm so excited with my two new budgies!!
November 8, 200915 yr Author As promised, here are my budgies - my three original ones, and two more I got today This is Bugalugs before his Goshawk attack - handraised him since he was 3 days old - he is now almost 3 And this is him today - a few weeks after his attack - he is doing well, I released him back into the aviary on Saturday. He's still a bit skinny as I can feel his breastbone abit too much but he's picked up really well This is Skylah, my first hen whom was given to me when her previous owner didn't want her and was going to release her. I'm slowly bringing her back to good health. Poor thing was almost featherless, very skinny and had mites all over her. This is Chiffon - I rescued her from someone who was trying to tame her and clipped her wingtips through the bone and flesh. She gets a bit narky at the other budgies, and is very timid which is understandable considering what happened. But she seems to be doing okay as well. Now time for my new ones! I love these two - to me they are pretty and they both have lovely natures. But they both need names My New Hen My New Cock Both together I hope you like them - would love any advice, help, info you may have on my birds. I'm still learning the colours so any feedback would be great - Also sorry for the huge post! Edited November 8, 200915 yr by Angelic82
November 8, 200915 yr Author Thanks Ross I have now put pictures up in the photo section of my three original budgies and my two new ones Sorry if its a big post - I did resize to small on Photobucket
November 8, 200915 yr thanks for sharing your pics with us. The birds look very nice. some of them are very lucky to have found you poor little birds..
November 8, 200915 yr They're all gorgeous, & you sound like a Budgie Hero!! Well done for rescuing the little guys!
November 9, 200915 yr Your budgies are gorgeous :rip: We are allowed to post much larger pictures than you have, on this forum. Sized to 480 by 640 maximum and then we can delight in seeing more of your pretty budgies
November 12, 200915 yr Author WELL!! Some surprising news! I have had my two new budgies quarrantined from Skylah, Chiffon and Bugalugs since I got them on Sunday. The problem I have had all week is Chiffon and the new cock have been almost giving themselves brain damage trying to see each other and get to each other through their cages. SO today I have placed Chiffon in the new cocks cage (so they didn't do themselves damage) and this is what has happened. I know it's not ideal to take them out of quarrantine so quickly but I thought it safe than them damaging or stressing themselves out. They've been feeding each other and preening each other all day. And I've noticed since the cock has been around, Chiffon's cheek and forehead feathers have brightened. I need to name the cock. any ideas? I also need to name my little blue one too but im actually not at all sure she's a hen now as her cere is turning blue. Also any one able to help me out with the colours of all my birds? I'm still learning so any info would be great Thank you! :emoticon112: Edited November 12, 200915 yr by Angelic82

Welcome Amy to the BBC! :emoticon112: The reason we on this forum encourage everyone to observe a strict quarantine period with their new purchases is that unfortunately a new bird may be carrying a disease that your existing budgies have no immunity to. I hope you are lucky and no misfortune comes of this. It looks like you have a Yellow Face DF Spangle hen and Light Green Spangle cock bird. From the look of her cere it appears that the hen is going out of condition because it is a dark brown color. This probably why she went straight into breeding mode. Do you know how old they are?
November 12, 200915 yr Author Thanks Renee I totally agree on keeping quarantine, but these two really looked like they were going to do themselves damage if I didn't place them together - I had even moved one cage to the other side of the house but well that didn't really work :emoticon112: haha Ooh okay, I shall write those down so I don't forget the colours - and if they do happen to breed, it will be interesting to see what colours come out of it. I will start a breeding log *excitement!!* I unfortunately don't know how old these two are - I've had Chiffon for two years, and the spangle cock for almost a week. The breeder I got him from said he was *approximately* a year old - not too sure he is though - i think he may be older. Bugalugs is coming up to three years old and Skylah is just over one year old, though she doesn't look like it - she was treated quite badly poor girl. And my other little hen/cock I think is quite young still. He/she still has the baby chirp to it and the baby play. I also don't know the colours of these three, are you able to help there too thanks!!
November 12, 200915 yr Not only is quarsntine essential to determine any diseases being carried but stress brings it out in them.... stress is being caught being moved being sold new food new friends BREEDING. so putting a new bird straight into breeding is a stress that may bring out an illness and cause its new partner to die also. Not a good move.
November 12, 200915 yr Author Oh whoops i'll take her out straight away! So sorry! I put her in his cage because they were getting all worked up and looked like they would damage themselves. Eeks, gosh not a smart move on my behalf. I feel terrible. I'll separate them now

Eeks, gosh not a smart move on my behalf. I feel terrible. I'll separate them now But unfortunately the stable door is open and the horse has bolted .... translation: you have already compromised quarantine so BOTH budgies need to be treated as 'new purchases' now. Keep all your 'new birds' separate and read up on Quarantining. Best of Luck! :emoticon112:
November 12, 200915 yr Author Thank you Renee, that makes me feel a tad better. And thank you Kaz for pointing it all out to me. I did have them quarantined and I do know its meant to be at least a month, but because they were so desperate, and I thought they would hurt themselves, that i did it. I'm still new at all this, and trying to learn. I'm sorry if what I have done has offended you all. I know better now and I guess the budgies wont hurt themselves will they?

A lot of people shortcut quarantine due to anxiety over wanting to put new budgies in with others. If you had ever expereinced what I have when a carrier bird gave psittacosis to another bird ( it died ) and killed all those others in cages around her, you would understand exactly why I give this advice now.
