Budgie Seed And Moulting

Featured Replies

I have learnt from here that a change in seed will force a moult, and this is true...

I bought a 25kg bag of seed a few months ago, and went to the same produce shop to get another a few weeks ago, they didn't seem to have the same one, I asked the shop keeper and he said it was the same just a different bag......well it wasn't, so now 80% of my birds are moulting.....is it the "mix" that forces a moult? If so if I were to buy seperate bages of different seed would that minimize this issue for me? What is the best mix I can do myself?

Thanks Anne

It may be their spring moult. Mine are all moulting at the moment and i haven't changed the seed. I have noticed that budgies have their major moult around april, then another moult to loose the winter down in October.

What feathers are they loosing?? Bad moults from seed changes often causes temporary baldness above the cere.

Thanks Liv....There is no baldness around the cere, just like pin feathers coming through on the tops of their heads, they only moulted a few months ago, so I was just putting it down to the change in seed?

Well I HAVE heard that a seed change will induce a moult from very experienced breeders. I am just changing my seed mix this week for my aviary birds, I will let you know if they go into a moult over the next week or so. :)

I do not find that a moult caused by change of seed involves a baldness near the cere...that may be a coincidence. It isnt my experience at all.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well it has been a couple of weeks now since I changed the seed that I feed my aviary birds.

I changed from Golden Cob Supreme Breeders mix to a 2:1 mixture of Triangle's Breeders mix plus Finch mix.

I cannot say that the change put my aviary birds into a major moult at all, some did go into a moult but not a particularly bad one.

I suspect other factors may be involved but I have no idea what they may be ....

So the jury's out on that one for me. :P

Diet changes can force a moult, as will moving birds from one spot to another (out of the breeding cabinets into a flight for example) BUT I have heard from many people this year that this spring moult seems to be a heavy one. Might be a combination of factors.

Thanks for getting back to me on this Renee.....

My birds didn't go into a major moult either, mainly pin feathers around the head and neck area, but it was all my birds, I know this cause I was waiting for a few to be free of all pin feathers for a few months before putting them in the breeding cabinets, a few weeks or so after thier "normal" moult....when I did pair them up is when I changed seed and a few weeks later the pin feathers were coming through again.... :D

I got the same bag as I did last time and made sure they would have the same brand in a few weeks time so that should take me over the last few that have chicks/eggs now, I won't be breeding over summer as its way to hot here in QLD...I don't have a proper "bird room", just outside and it's WAY too hot.....

So I guess the jury is out for me as well...... :)
