A friend called me tonight as she knows someone whose budgie has had a stroke (diagnosed by the vet) and while I'm not sure how bad it's symptoms are she wondered what sort of recovery budgies have if any? Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing??? I'd wonder what sort of clues to look for in case this ever happens to one of my own birds.

Yeah they do have strokes, some lost function in their legs, some one leg, some can't fly anymore. I guess it is much the same as humans and the symptoms depend a lot on the severity. As far as recovery is concerned; if the bird is not too damaged and still relatively young and/or mobile, they generally are pretty adaptable to new situations.

 

Plenty of them get around fine without the use of their legs or a wing, just use their beak and the appendages they do have. The important thing is to ensure they have food and water in a place where their new movement capacity allows them to reach.

I had one with symptoms as desribed.

 

She was getting around with her head upside down and gradually got weaker untill she karked it.

Agree with others... Yes they can, but depends on the severity ot it as to if they can get by or not. I had one who had a stroke and had to be put down. As to getting better. I don't think they do. As in humans... my Mum had a stroke over 10 years ago, and one of her symptoms is she is weak on her left size. With regular physio and gym, she has become a little stronger, but will never have full strength back. I believe with budgies, they can addapt to their disabilities... like haveing one leg ect... but if s/he can't eat, it would be better to end it's suffering. Please let us know what happens.

My budgie, Kevin has over the last week taken on a serious tilt of his head..

He appetite is as good as ever, and he is drinking fine. His droppings are formed as usual, no discharge or change in consistency or appearance. Balance is a little off but he can get around okay. 

Little difficulty flying, but then he always has had.. could this be a stroke? 

My budgie sadly had a stroke and died in just an couple hours he was two years old. He appeared fine but began to isolate himself which I believe was disorientation and then in about half an hour he could not move his legs or body. It was impossible for me to get him to a vet. He shut his eyes and was breathing very slowly with a faint heart heat for around two hours. Sadly he then passed away. I did some research and it is very peaceful for them.
