October 25, 200915 yr Author P.S. There are no bad pets...just BAD PET OWNERS. TOTALLY agree!!! It's about the behaviour and this often relates back to the owner's/parents. You can make the same 'uneducated' assumtions about human children too... but just because some parents are bad parents and as a result their children are little 'you know what's' doesn't mean that all children are naughty, disrespectful, and do things they shouldn't. Many parents and pet owners are responsible... they bring their cats inside at night, train their dogs to behave and teach their children to respect others. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. It's also a pity, that the later can cause many people to form opinions of the species as a whole. I'd also like to remind everyone to keep this topic to what it was originally about... many members on here have cats and dogs, and a cat v's dog debate can not be won either way. We all have differnt opinions, so going back and forth is doing nothing but taking this topic further off the original post. So, to go back on topic...How are your birds today? Have they been returned back to the aviary or are you keeping them confined a little longer. I totaly agree I have had cat and dogs and for now I will just stick to my birds.RossHow are your birds now Splatthey are fine Ross
October 25, 200915 yr I second what Ross says about not taking it personally, you should try being a German Shepherd owner! And yes, considering there are 7 dogs running around our place, I often step in unburied (seemingly strategically placed) dog poo but I forgive them their minor indescretions, considering they are never off my property unattended, they ALWAYS come back when called, they are contained in smalled comfortable runs when we are away and are inside at night except for ablution trips so I figure I have the right to be a little bit annoyed when someones feral moggy wanders around our place and tries to eat my birds. And to be honest, it'd be a lucky dog to go home alive from our place if it decided to bust in here too unless it bested all 7 of my dogs at once. And sorry Kaz but no matter what you say, I still do and always will take exception to cats and cat owners (unless they are one of the few who have the special outdoor cat enclosure for their cat) and that's my personal choice and always will be (and yes vendetta if you want to call it that). I've seen wild cats the size of kelpies all over in our beautiful station country and through National Parks and when you hear the figures of the wildlife these little hunters decimate it's hard to turn down the hate dial. Even wild dogs don't get through that much small and precious wildlife (quite a few sheep, yes).
October 25, 200915 yr Author Greg said if he still had his shot gun that cat would be cat heaven. About 6 years ago before i moved in I rotten dog broke in here and slaughtered nearly all Gregs racing pigeons, anyway it had the cheek to come back the next day for another kill but Greg was waiting and blew it's head off, he has the cartridge in his pigeon coupe for remembrance of the loss and revenge of the killer!!!! Greg was devastated by the loss of his birds the dog which was a big dog killed over 100 birds, Yeras of breeding gone, I think there was a 2 or 3 birds left.
October 25, 200915 yr Yeah and you gotta wonder how much the damn dogs owner really cared if it was allowed to wander around at will. Another pet hate of mine. I would be visiting the dogs owners with the shotgun too....... grrrrrrrrr. Glad to hear that your budgies at least have made a full recovery. Edited October 26, 200915 yr by nubbly5
October 26, 200915 yr Sure it was a cat and not a possum, or an owl, or bats/flying foxes. This post makes me very angry and disappointed with humans.
October 26, 200915 yr Good to hear all is okay again. Night frights are the pits I am not a real cat person either, but i love other peoples cats. I get annoyed with the cat owners who let them out all day and all night and basically only come back to eat their dinner. Kaz is the most responsible cat owner I know Edited October 26, 200915 yr by **Liv**
October 26, 200915 yr Author Sure it was a cat and not a possum, or an owl, or bats/flying foxes. This post makes me very angry and disappointed with humans. Yes it was a cat because we saw it.
October 26, 200915 yr This has never been about individual people on here. It is all about animal management. If one of us was into falconry, we woudl not think it woudl be responsible to let it loose and swoop down on someone's pigeons. That is the same argument with cats. Simple as that. There are responsible owners and irresponsible owners. We all know that when something happens we often get emotional. If a person of race A crashes into our car, we get the car back from repairs, and then another person of the same race crashes into our car, we would naturally turn around and say that all "Race A" people can't drive. We know it is not true. It is an emotional response. I do not like cats because of what they have done in the past, however when I stayed at kaz's place, i loved her cats, simple as that. When i go to a freinds place, they have 3 cats, and i pat them, and they sit on my lap, all is good. I like cats when they are indoors, but I cannot deny the damage they do outdoors. Dogs can be destructive outdoors. My dogs have killed birds abd lizards. I do all I can to stop that by blocking access to the yard for lizards and trying to put feeding chances for the birds away from the dogs. Whilst pet owners are the problem, cats are a problem by their nature, as dogs can be. The reason I have 6ft fences is to stop my dogs getting out. If cats can jump these, and will climb out, maybe they should have these opportunities restricted.
October 26, 200915 yr Author Yes Dave is right I am a dog lover and even though I do not have my own dog now only Greg's but when I did have my cavs If i took them for a walk as far as i was concerned it was my responability to scoop up the droppings and the the dogs never left my yard with out me. So I find it degrafeful when you see dog owners walking their dog and letting them poop on someones front lawn or nature strip then walk off and leave it, I personally think it disgusting. And as for cats they should be in cat enclosures or indoors because having birds and not owning a cat why should I have to put up with them jumping the fence every opportunity they get. Which jere is not much. But around here cats do a lot of damage to the wildlife. Anyway I didn't start this to have a hate thing about cats and dogs, I which i never put it up and which it would go away. I just wanted share about the shock I had about the birds and especially since 2 of those birds I had sold and one is my best violet that I won first at the shield and I was hoping to take him back abd try and win best Adult bird in Violet with him. And the way I see it, IF it wasn't for that awful cat jumping the fence and jumping on the aviary the birds would of been fine but now I have 4 birds all up that have damaged their wings . Maybe they are only bruised BUt any way I lost the sale because of that cat also. SO I HAVE A RIGHT TO BE ARKY AT THAT CAT.
October 26, 200915 yr I believe you are allowed to capture a cat in your yard with a trap and take it to the animal shelter... after a certain amount of times the cat is caught trespassing on your land, the owners will be required by law to restrain the cat.... i think... We used to have a cat come around here every night and it hasn't been back since i drenched it with the garden hose
October 26, 200915 yr Hope your birds all recover Splat. As to night time bringing cats in, day time is just as bad, a neighbour's cat has repeatedly been raiding little honey eaters nests in bushes and also caught munching on the remains of a wagtail. During the day. I know it's natural for a cat to hunt but awful to watch when you can't save the victims in time.
October 26, 200915 yr yes i hope they come good also i was really looking forward to adding them birds to my flock unfortunately its best for the birds to stay put after such a fright just let me say that as my name was mentioned at start i would have been quiet happy to still take birds but splat and i talked and she decided she would rather keep them than sell an inured bird this i believe was very responsible of her giving the stress they had already been through and although saddened im still very happy with splats decision to keep the birds on as it shows her responsible ownership and best decision for whats best for her birds i praise her on that
