Posted October 23, 200915 yr Last night was a nightmare, We have a dog called buffy and she never lets a cat in the yard but last night she spent the night at Lisa's and and the worst happened a rotten cat came over the fence and onto the aviary scaring the crapp out of the birds . Thank god they are all fine but 3 can't fly any more well not at the moment they might of just bruised their wing but seemed to have hurt their wingThe worst thing is one is my best violet the one I got 1at for at the shield and the other 2 are 2 that GB wanted. I guess I will have to keep them for breeding now as she won't want birds that can't fly and 3 of them are really nice birds too. I just hope I can still show the violet because i am devasted about it. Edited October 23, 200915 yr by KAZ
October 23, 200915 yr Rotten luck mate Have you pulled the injured birds out into a smaller area to assess their problems ?
October 23, 200915 yr Author Yep all in the breeding room in holding cages. they all look fine so hope thye fly again soon
October 23, 200915 yr Not good to hear this. I am scared this may happen at my place if my dogs are not here.
October 24, 200915 yr Bummer! Night fright in the aviary is the worst. Â Hope they recover okay for you.
October 24, 200915 yr Thats great news Why don't people who keep cats and dogs keep them in their own yards. Ross
October 24, 200915 yr Thats great news Why don't people who keep cats and dogs keep them in their own yards. Ross  Dogs may be easy, but Cats... Have you ever tried keeping a Cat confined!?!? I do however think we should have laws everywhere where Cats must be kept indoors at night. Some suburbs near me do have this already... but should be worldwide!  I'm glad your birds are doing better today Splat.
October 24, 200915 yr Author Thats great news Why don't people who keep cats and dogs keep them in their own yards. Ross  I totally agree they should be caged in big enclosers. or indoors
October 24, 200915 yr I am so not a cat person. I think that cats should be confined to the property in which they live. Now, if that means you have to build a cat enclosure, or keep it indoors, so be it, but I really dislike it when they wander around outside. I have a neighbour who complains about dogs barking, but has 3 cats that wander all over the neighbourhood setting multiple dogs off. Go figure.
October 24, 200915 yr Owning four cats and having birds....I make sure our cats are ALWAYS inside before nightfall, not because of our birds as the cats are now trained not to run atop the aviaries anymore...BUT because I believe cats belong inside at night and not bothering neighbours.
October 24, 200915 yr glad your birds are fine mate as for cats it is law here that if one comes onto your property night or day you can take it to the pound they even hire cages to catch it reason for this is that our local law states cats must be on their own property at all times i love this law and believe it should be everywhere
October 24, 200915 yr I used to work with a fellow who had a neighbour that let his dog wander all night so 1 night at 3am he rang them up and said to get their dog , with the reply its not mine so my friend said then you don't mind if I shoot it , well the lights went on the dog was called and never outside of a night again. ps I am a animal lover of all kinds but they must be under control. Ross
October 24, 200915 yr Author I don't know what the law is in this town but when I lived in Bendigo I am sure that was brought over, I even got a cat trap to cat one moggy that use to poop under my clothes line and the washing always smelled like cat poop plus you would nearly stand on it yuk so I chuck the mickey one day and rang the council they had a trap there in no time and I caught the little rotten scandrel that night. They said if no one came forward to claim him they word more than likely rehome if. He was a long haired cat quite nice but I think dumped because his coated was all matted. I fely mean doing this but I couldn't stand hanging the washing out because of the smell
October 24, 200915 yr Great to hear that your birds are A-okay. Â 6 whippets and a German Shepherd "fix" any cat problem that we have. We USED to have a neighbours cat come visit but 7 dogs happened to that one night............. Â If I have to keep my dogs contained, under control, not wandering etc etc I believe the same should apply to the feral little wildlife murderers. Edited October 24, 200915 yr by nubbly5
October 25, 200915 yr Totally agree, have you ever gardened with bare hands after a visit from your neighbourhood moggie? Nearly stopped dropping my aviary "blind" down at night but decided against it because of this. Let alone the wildlife these pests kill.
October 25, 200915 yr Being bird owners does not always go hand in hand with other pets. HOWEVER, I am a cat owner. I own four. My cats just dont get to be in other peoples yards...two of them have never left the house from the age of kittens. We have litter trays and even our two older cats who sun themselves out the front of our house come back inside to use the litter tray  No cat gets to be outside by teatime. Our two eldest stay in our yard. Why is it that all cats must be seen as vermin and killers ? My dogs kill more "wildlife" than my cats have ever done. Cats bury their poop and dogs do not. My dogs would kill my birds in a split second if they had a chance. Come on people..........really you can carry a cat vendetta too far. Totally agree, have you ever gardened with bare hands after a visit from your neighbourhood moggie?Have you ever trodden in a massive pile of dog poop just sitting there not buried ?
October 25, 200915 yr I hope your birds are okay Splat... . Â P.S. There are no bad pets...just BAD PET OWNERS. Edited October 25, 200915 yr by dek21
October 25, 200915 yr Don't take it personally Kaz as you are one of the minority that does the right thing , I also have trouble with a dog thats let out of a night that leaves poop on my lawn , if I find out the owners they will end up with it at the front door one night. Â Ross

However, there are very few people who simply don't mind cats. Throughout history, there have been some famous cat lovers, as well as some famous cat haters. Despite the fact that in early Christian stories, cats often symbolized Satan, some Saints kept feline companions.   FAMOUS CAT LOVERS  Raymond Chandler - talked to his black Persian, Taki, as though she was human and called her his secretary because she sat on his manuscripts as he tried to revise them  Sir Winston Churchill - (1874 - 1965) Churchill's cat, Jock, shared his master's bed and table. Churchill often sent servants to find Jock and refused to start eating until his cat was present at the table  Albert Schweitzer - (1875 - 1965) Sometimes left-handed Schweitzer wrote prescriptions with his right hand, so as not to disturb his cat, Sizi, who liked to fall asleep on his left arm  Mohammed - Mohammed (570 - 632), the founder of the Muslim faith, thought dogs unclean, but liked cats. He once cut off the sleeve of his robe to avoid waking a sleeping cat as he rose to pray  Petrarch - (1304 - 1374) When the poet died, his cat was put to death and mummified  Cardinal Richelieu - (1585 - 1642) This Prince of the Church reserved one of his rooms for cats, where overseers fed them chicken pates twice a day. When he died, the overseers and cats were provided for  Ernest Hemingway shared his Key West home with more than thirty cats  Florence Nightingale owned more than sixty cats in her lifetime and often complained of mysterious "stains" on her paperwork  cardinal Richelieu, who had dozens of cats, built a cattery at Versailles in which to house them  Mark Twain kept eleven cats at his farm in Connecticut. His daughter, Susy once remarked, "The difference between Papa and Mamma is, that Mamma loves morals and Papa loves cats."  St. Agatha (d. 251) is still known as Santo Gato (Saint Cat) in parts of the Pyrénées mountain range of southwestern France. She is said to appear in the form of a cat on her day, February5, to punish women who have angered her.  St. Francis of Assisi (1182 - 1226), according to an Italian legend, was saved from a plague of mice by a cat which sprang miraculously out of his sleeve.  St. Gregory the Great (540 - 604) possessed no worldly goods except a cat, which ie liked tostroke and hold in his arms whilehe was meditating.  St. Ives (1035 - 1115), the patron saint of lawyers, appears in portraits with a cat by his side, and is sometimes depicted as a cat.  St. Jerome (340 - 420) was famous for owning a cat and is frequently depicted in paintings accompanied by a domestic cat instead of his more traditional lion mascot.  St. Molig of Ireland, according to legend, became disturbed when his pet cat caught a sparrow which had eaten a fly; he restored both bird and insect to life.  Some other famous cat lovers include: Jeremy Bentham, Raymond Chancler, Colette, Victor Hugo, Samuel Johnson, Pope Leo XII, Montaigne, Edgar Allan Poe, Theodore Roosevelt, Sir Walter Scott, Mark Twain, Horace Walpole, Abraham Lincoln, and H.G. Wells.    FAMOUS CAT HATERS  Johannes Brahms - (1833 - 1897) One of Brahm's favourite forms of relaxatin was to sit at an open window and attempt to kill neighbourhood cats with a bow and arrow  Napoleon Bonaparte - Napoleon was once found sweating with fear and lunging wildly with his sword at the tapestry-covered walls. The source of his fear was a small kitten  Noah Webster - (1758 - 1843) Webster described the cat as a "deceitful animal and when enraged, extremely spiteful"  Dwight D. Eisenhower - (1890 - 1969) Eisenhower's loathing for cats was so great, he gave his staff orders to shoot any seen on the grounds of his home  Henry III - (1551 - 1589) Henry was like a lion when persecuting the Protestant minority in France, but the presence of a cat turned him into a chicken. He would faint if a cat came near him  Georges Louis Leclerc de Buffon - (1707 - 1788) The French naturalist praised dogs, but claimed that cats possessed "an innate malice and perverse disposition which increases as they grow up." He added that they "easily assume the habits of society, but never acquire its manners    The Efeects of Dogs On Wildlife  Wildlife killed by dogs and cats  read this....two sides to every coin. October 25, 200915 yr P.S. There are no bad pets...just BAD PET OWNERS. Â TOTALLY agree!!! Â It's about the behaviour and this often relates back to the owner's/parents. You can make the same 'uneducated' assumtions about human children too... but just because some parents are bad parents and as a result their children are little 'you know what's' doesn't mean that all children are naughty, disrespectful, and do things they shouldn't. Many parents and pet owners are responsible... they bring their cats inside at night, train their dogs to behave and teach their children to respect others. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. It's also a pity, that the later can cause many people to form opinions of the species as a whole. Â I'd also like to remind everyone to keep this topic to what it was originally about... many members on here have cats and dogs, and a cat v's dog debate can not be won either way. We all have differnt opinions, so going back and forth is doing nothing but taking this topic further off the original post. Â So, to go back on topic... Â How are your birds today? Have they been returned back to the aviary or are you keeping them confined a little longer.
October 25, 200915 yr I totally agree with you Kaz as I have three cats all inside but did have a cat that went outside stayed around the house but I had to go outside one day and find someones dog mauling my cat in my front yard I feel sorry for anyone that has thier birds attacked by cats but dogs can do as much damage but people don't want to blame them ps Splat glad to hear your birds are recovering well
