I`m Marie & I`m New

Hello everyone.

I`m new and I have two budgies...... I couldn`t find a place where they had health issues so I will put it here for you to see.

My little female`s name is Limonade. She is about 6 months old. About 2 months ago, we decided to get a male and he`s now about 4 1/2 months old. I didn`t know she was a female at first because I was very new to budgies. But now I do know...At first, they used to get along so well, preening and kissing each other, sleeping side by side. For the past week almost, she`s been attacking him more and more and won`t let him eat or sleep without picking on him. When I let them out of the cage, she goes where he is and attacks him.

Presently, I put her in another cage. He slept most of the afternoon. (His name is Ocean). The poor little guy was probably traumatized. I don`t know why she is doing that as they got along so well before. Can someone help please and tell me if this is normal behavior for birds and why all of a sudden she doesn`t like him anymore? I took her out of the cage because he kept looking over his shoulder to see if she was going to attack him. I had two of everything but she made his life miserable all the time.

I read somewhere than when budgies have bonded, they are together for life...I didn`t realize that she would come to be so angry at him.

We recently got a green cheek conure parrot who is in the same room as the budgies. They are all in the living room with us. He sometimes walks on their cage but I don`t let him there long though. I let the budgies out too but never at the same time as the little parrot. Limonade started acting out around the time the parrot got here. Could that have anything to do with it???

She seems to be knawing allot at the calcium bone in the past week as well as the iodine bone...The calcium bone way way more than usual. Is this normal behavior? She gets vegies every day and applies when we have them as well. They aren`t crazy about vegies though. They will nibble at them if put in front of their face but they don`t eat them much.

When can I start putting her back into the cage with him do you think? Should I wait to make sure they preen outside the cage first? I`m so sad at this cause I hate to see them on opposite sides of the room in separate cages. He slept almost all afternoon after I took her out and only ate a bit. I guess the poor little guy is still traumatized. It`s the first time she has acted out. She`s usually good natured. Now she`s unbearable with him.

I have removed Limonade from the cage and put her in another one yesterday. Just for an update, Ocean is the one who is getting attacked. They used to preen and kiss each other often and now she was always attacking him. But I have to tell you that he doesn`t look well at all since yesterday. He sleeps most of the time and barely eats. He drinks more often than he sleeps and seems to have a hard time getting from one perch to the other. I uncovered him awhile ago and he did eat a little millet but barely. Usually when I offer it, he dives right in. I put the millet so he could reach it. He drank water 2-3 times already and is perched and sleeping again. He seems to fall asleep everywhere. I even managed to hold him in my hand which is very unusual cause he doesn`t like to be held. He`s about 4-5 months old. There are no avian vets around here so right now, I have him partially covered so he doesn`t see her and he`s sleeping.I don`t know if it`s the latest stress that caused this or if he`s sick. Any comments would be welcome.

I appreciate the people who will see this post. I posted some of it in budgie behavior but since I didn`t see a health column to post it in, I`m posting it here in hopes that more people will see it. Thank you kindly. I`m so worried about my little baby. Limonade, however, seems to be doing well.

Females are very bossy vs males and can be nasty in nature. Is she going through a molt? She may also be in breeding condition which is making her hormonal. What color is her cere presently? How large is the cage you have for them? Can you post a picture of their set up? Seperating them is a very good thing. How long do you keep them covered for night time?

I read somewhere than when budgies have bonded, they are together for life...I didn`t realize that she would come to be so angry at him. Budgies do not bond for life in fact they will go from female to female if they are in an aviary situation and are breeding. They will bond with a partner but not for life.

Absolutely yes. Never let birds walk on other bird cages the bird in the cage can nip their toes right off especially the bigger birds.

Yes this is normal.

In the FAQ's I have an article on how to introduce a 2nd bird I would use those tips and start from beginning. What concerns me is his sleeping a lot that is not normal for budgies they are usually very active first thing in the AM, will nap around lunch time and then become active again in the later afternoon and evening,

Any comments would be welcome. He probably is sick from the undue stress and he could be going through a molt too and his immune system down with this stress has probably made hims sick. I would keep in a cage covered on 3 sides, I would make sure he is in a room with a heater and keep it at 75F - 80 F, warmth can pull them out of it if you get to them fast enough, continue to let him eat anything he wants. Watch his poos they should not be water they should be firm with white on the outside and brown/black in the middle. If you don't see either of these no white means no drinking and no black means no eating then you have even a larger problem. I do suggest finding a vet that sees birds even if it is not an avian vet, a vet is better then no vet at all.

Oh thank you thank you Elly. I will check health and maintenance there too. Ocean has eaten a bit and drank. The poo seems irregular more white and more liquid...He does eat a bit but closes his eyes and goes to sleep again. I have already covered the cage on 3 sides plus the top. I have also put the heat up to give him a chance.

Ocean seems to be eating a little bit but only screeches a bit and not like before. I`m wondering if he was hurt physically in Limonade`s attacks and that he sleeps allot because of that...Can anyone advise if this would make him sleep so much?

I would say the physical attacks probably stressed him out which probably made him ill.

Thank you Elly. He has eaten a bit more this evening but still sleeps allot. I sure hope he goes from better to better. This evening, I had a lamp on top of his cage but a blanket underneath so the light wouldn`t bother him. THe heat source was a bit better. He is not chirping or singing at all. He does let out the occasional screech screech but not very often and only once or twice at a time. I did see him eat on the millet a little while ago so at least he is eating and drinking which is a good thing.

I`m not sure if she physically hurt him much or if it is just the stress that has run him down and if he is ill, what kind of illness he might have. I`ve been so worried about the little guy. I check him often and other than eat or drink, he sleeps constantly. I sure hope it subsides soon. Thank you.

Ocean has made a complete recovery and is singing merily...Poop and everything else is back to normal. :) Thank you for all your help. I had purchased a general antibiotic with 8 different substances in it such as something for diarrhea, vitamins and a bit of antibiotic. I also gave a drop or two of kaopectate and within a few days, he started to perk up.....The whole thing lasted about 3-4 days and then I started to hear him singing and chirping again. Thank you again for your help.
