Posted October 19, 200915 yr She's only 22 days old and keeps finding a way to get out of the nest box....then I find her chirping and running around the bottom of the cage. I'm worried she's going to hurt herself. Seems a bit too soon to be leaving the nest to me. Should I be concerned?
October 19, 200915 yr Well considering they fledge the nest in another week or so, she is just getting ahead of herself Try putting an incecream tub under the nestbox hole with springy wood shavings in it. Scatter seed on the floor of the cage for her to graze on and make sure you put her back each night as she wont be fully feathered yet. Are your nestboxes so designed that the entry hole is too easy for the chicks to get out ?
October 19, 200915 yr Author No...the hole in the nest box is almost at the top of the box...I'm really quite amazed that she can climb up there at all unless she's stepping up on top of the other chicks like her own personal stepladder. The icecream tub is a great idea...they're all asleep now tucked away so she'll be safe until morning. She's an adventurous little thing, that's for sure Thanks for the good advice!
