Hey guys, was checking some eggs today and although I've seen this many times I thought it might be nice to try to get a video for those who haven't seen it before.

It's the Little tiny heart of a little tiny embryo beating... look carefully, but not too close or you'll miss it.

Hope you enjoy :D

That was lovely to see...thank you for posting it. B)

What sort of light source were you using?

Haha I use anything to candle my eggs :)

That one I was using my mobile phone :D anything does the job, and if you know the pair you're taking the egg from and know their reactions to touching/handling their eggs/young it's okay to touch the eggs. That's how you get a better look. Many eggs that "look" fertilised from afar aren't when up close, or are DIS/addled

Hey libby, my wife has the same cell phone and once that bright light turned on but she didnt know how she did it and hasnt done it since? Where is the button or option to do that? Hehehe!

haha you turn the camera on, then the bottom left of the screen says options. You go into that and select "light on" You can use it with the phone closed or open. It's just a V3 razr... nothing special, rather old by todays standards of phones...

But like i said i use pretty much anything, torches, phones, camera.... depends what i have on me or what I can be bothered going to get :)

libby

you should not touch eggs weather or not the birds know you or not as your hands carry germs that penitrate through the shell and can cause dis (dead in shell) also as the hen rotates the eggs the eggs would need to be moved very delicate if you did chose to do it this way as you would need to be very careful to put it back exactly as you found it same side spot all as the rotation of the eggs is most importaint and any miss placed ones the hen may have a patten and if you move the eggs she loses trake also causeing d i s , i use to just hold my eggs up to the sun this also works but reality is desterbance of eggs through touch means more chance of less chicks

and macka im one grumpy chick so ...snap , old maid what ever i also say things as is although i do try to refrain on here although i have had my fair share of hidden or deleted posts

thanks kaz

I agree too... best not to touch.. not because the parents will care, but its extremely easy to addle the eggs or transfer bacteria into the shell from our fingers and leading to the embryos death .

Very informative video Lib! well shot =D

I dont touch the eggs I candle...using a torch behind the egg IN the nestbox......pointing forward to where you are means no need to handle the egg. You see what you need to see without changing the order of things. Eggs are in sequence in the nest....eggs rotated in and out from under the hen as she keeps them at a consistant temperature. There really is no need to handle an egg for candling.
