Posted October 16, 200915 yr I've been a breeder for about a year now and ever since I've started breeding I've wanted to hand rear a budgie to have inside as a pet. How should I go about this, do I bring it inside as an egg and put it in an incubater and wait for it to hatch or bring it inside as a baby budgie? Also can I raise it using wet mix for lorikeets or do I have to use actual handrearing formular? Any info will be great thanks.
October 16, 200915 yr I would suggest you go from chick stage. Too much can go wrong doing it from an egg. Wet mix for lori's is specific to loirikeets and not suitable for rearing budgie babies. Send a message to member Libby http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showuser=3634 who handraises all the time....she will be able to advise you
October 17, 200915 yr i hand tame all time their is no reason you need to take away from nest at all i handle my babys from 2 weeks on i bring the box inside for 10 minits every day and hold the babys this does not effect mum as they just think im changing bedding then as the chicks feather up at 3 weeks i bring just the chick i want inside for up to half hour then working myself to 1 hour after 4 weeks the chick is only returned to be feed with mum every two hours and then at5 weeks the baby is use to me so much it isnt bothered by me handling it in the cage where it stays with mum and dad to be feed until its coming out nest and eating its self then when i know its eating its self i bring it straight inside no cage and just sit it on my shoulder all day at night its caged and if i go out for safety if the bird trys to fly off i simply just talk to it softly and continuously pat it on the occasion they do fly i simply get him or her and return to me if it wont sit on shoulder i place on my knee but genrally the dont try fly as they just no theirs no point as i will always just return them to me,or their cage if it becomes anoying then after ten minits i get it back out they soon learn if i want them to sit in a certain place i just put them their and every time they move i put them back its all about percistance and them trusting you never chase your bird to catch it simply walk up and keep talking when you are really close simply place finger under it and bring it down to your chest where you can then clasp gently in your other hand give a little chat to then place back where you want few days is all it takes of full on intence time
