Hen Abandoned Eggs

Featured Replies

From a bird that was doing it all wrong at the beginning, she seems to have the egg laying and sitting bit going right. Now, if they are fertile, let's see how she and partner go with the raising.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. This is the first egg she's actually laid in the nesting box, so I'm pleased! Is there anything else people think I should be doing besides checking on day 5 for fertility, and marking dates of hatching range for those that are on my calendar? Should I line the box with millet/food, for instance? I'm starting to feel like an anxious mother myself.

if shes sensitive to laying in box

or sitting i would just let her sit

i would not check fertility i would wait for the half way point then see whats going on in that aspect

I agree

I agree too as the more you check and the more she gets a fright she may puncture the eggs when she jumps up and then they will no goo. I always leave my alone for a 10 days or so and then when I do check I always knock on the door to let her know that I am checking so they don't get a big fright and bounce off the eggs spreading them everywhere.

Thanks all, for the advice. I have been leaving the front of the cage - where then nesting box is hung - covered for privacy and only was sliding the black door up (not the clear door behind it) once before bed to see without putting my hands in or anything. I will just let her do her thing then.

I completely sympathize with your nervous nelliness! lol----I used to tell myself to take a deep breath before approaching the cage for checking :D

Yes, I'm very aware that any anxiety on my part will be counterproductive to this first time mom.

Thank you to you all for the supportive tips and enthusiasm. There is a special feeling in the house, the feeling of the sacredness of possible new life. I truly have the potential to become the "bird lady" I have been nick-named at work  , and lots of space in my house if new life emerges to keep them all. I can see why breeders get so excited, although I know from reading alot of these posts that the unexpected can and does happen. Is there a post someone can refer me to as to how to proceed and what to look for if any of these eggs eventually hatch?

Muchas gracias, Kaz! What a fantastic wealth of information - I look forward to going over it very carefully.

Daddy's definitely in touch with his feminine side. He's in the box with her. What a helpful guy :P

I have occasionally had cock birds who sat on the eggs allowing the hen to get out and feed. I have photos somewhere.
