Hi All, Could someone please tell me what this chick is called. Dad is Normal Green, Mum is Yellow faced rec Grey Pied. (from past forum info)

The camera doesn't really show his real colours, but hope it helps.

This fellow.

Plus one grey green normal. A real mixed bag. Don't know parents history either. Not up with genetics either. Thanks in anticipation.

The chick is yellowface opaline blue ?

Colour looks grey in one photo and blue in another.

a head patch can often appear on a spangle without it meaning split for recessive pied. In early spangle breeding dominant pied played a part of developing the spangle so a patch quite often shows on a spangle. But if the parent is recessive then it could mean that.

This guy is No1.jpg

opaline not normal wing pattern.

Were all chicks from the same nest ? If so, where did the spangles come from as spangles only come if one parent IS a spangle.

Are you colony breeding ?

Yes Kaz they are all from same nest. Caged not colony. Hope this helps query.

Well dad isnt a spangle but mum could be a spangle recessive pied. Can we have a closeup of her wing markings ?

Thank's Dave. So it looks like I have 4 spangles, 3 opalines and 1 gr.green normal ( but has spot on head as well) from one nest. Can 2 spangles still in box, be opaline as well as spangle?

Hi Kaz thank's again. I thought it might be when I saw the "V" on it's back. The first chick is looking bluer by the day very pretty. :D

Thank's again Dave. Hope my little one stays blue. Off the subject a bit I just checked out Kaz's Grey wing post. What is the difference between the Grey wing and Spangle? I can see difference in feather pattern between Kaz's and my blue spangle in this post but can't work out the "why" of it. If that makes sense. Is it the spangle's feather edge is dark and the Grey wing edge is grey? :D

It is probably easiest to explain the difference with a blue budgie.

A normal blue budgie has black wings, and around the edge of each feather of the wing there is a white arc.

A spangle blue budgie has white wings, and around the edge of each feather of the wing there is a black are.

A blue greywing looks just like a normal blue budgie, but the black on the wings is replaced with grey.

Hope that helps

Thank's Dave, So if any colour has that grey edge to it's feathers it's a greywing/whatever?

no, you are confusing spangle markings with normals and greywings. Normal budgies have their wing markings mostly black, in a blue budgie the edges will be white and in a green budgie the edges will be yellow. In a greywing where thye most of the wing colour in a normal budgie is black a greywing will be grey...Not on the edges but in the other parts.

Here the difference between spangle and normal b7f55af7.jpg

normal on the left spangle on the right.

With greywing replace the black of a normal with grey

I think I've got it so it's the "inside" colour of the feather not the edge. :D

Yep :D

I edited my post above to make it a bit better. Compare the first bird - normal blue - to the third bird - greywing blue. Note the difference between the black and the grey.

Just to make things interesting, I am going to throw Clearwings into the mix. A clearwing will may look like a greywing, but it is not. A clearwing that has "messy" wings may look like a greywing due to dark markings. This is a show fault. You tell the difference by looking at the cheek patches. A clearwing should have bright blue cheek patches whilst a greywing should have grey cheek patches.

whilst a greywing should have grey cheek patches.

why would a greywing have grey cheekpatches Dave ?

Thank's Dave and Kaz, I've got the Greywing bit sorted (for to-day anyway). Haven't looked at the clearwing yet,nor the clear flight, lace wing etc, etc.

Boy this genetic thing is complicated. Still trying to work out how I ended up with my assortment for this year. :)

yours could be carrying violet kaz i know i know why does every bird on here have to refer back to violet in one way or another :) but thoughs patches pretty violet B)
