Hybrid Parrots

I was driving home today and alongside a country road near our home was a flock of white corellas. I wish I had the camera with me, as there was also two obvious hybrids that were pink and grey galahs crossed with corellas. They had a faded pale pink and grey feathering and the corella head and crest. A whole flock of white corellas and two hybrid pink and greys crossed with corella. First time I have seen them out and about like that. :)B)

Wow Kaz you need to go back and try and get a picture, or chuck ya camera in ya car just in case :) as that is so interesting. We saw an albino magpie a few weeks ago, pure white

An hybrid galah/corella used to visit my place in the nineties. I called him Larrikin. He came each day with either the flock of corellas or the galahs. He did not necessarily leave with the flock he came with. He was not well accepted by either flock. He bullied the galahs and was bullied by the corellas.

He was the biggest clown I ever saw. I used to hang interesting things in my gazebo for him to swing on. He would accept whatever food I was offering and them turn on a splendid show - swinging, doing somersaults and what have you. That Christmas, my guests turned the chairs around so that they could all look out the windows at Larrikin and the galahs. When it was time to eat, they declined to sit at the table. They filled a plate and returned to look out the window at the original entertainment.

Unfortunately, these hybrids (or mules) are infertile and rarely live more than a season. Larrikin came for about 8 months and was seen no more. Sadly, those were the days before I had a camera.

i think they call corellas x galahs "Apricot galahs" for memory

How gorgeous to see in the wild

Since it's only fairly recent hybrid in captivity to be bred i don't think anyone really knows the true life span yet.

i wonder if Peggy will get down with my cockatiel Kaz  Who knows eh? might have a "cockband" or a "Barratiel" to deal with soon  i can tell you that that one definatly won't be fertile

It is not uncommon for that hybrid in the wild just rarely seen or noticed as a hybrid.

They have been bred in captivity for quite some years now (I first noticed them some time in the 90's) and can be regularly purchased at the bigger bird outlets.

I did not know that. What do the sellers call them?

I don't know that I have ever seen them any particular name.

Here is a list of other crosses to do with Galah, Corella etc.

Galah x Short bill corella ( seen in the wild also)

Galah x Long Billed Corella

Short Billed Corella x Long Billed Corella

Galah x Sulphur Crested Cockatoo

Major Mitchell Cockatoo x Galah

Major Mitchell Cockatoo x Short Billed Corella

Short Billed Corella x Sulphur Crested Cockatoo

Galah & Corella & MM Cockatoo sub species hybreds... also common

Other birds....

King parrots x Red wing parrots

Eastern Rosella x Red Rumped Parrot

Superb Parrot x Red wing Parrot

Eastern Rosella x Pale Headed rosella

Princess x Red Rumped

Lorrikeet Hybreds (Rainbow, red collar, scaley, musk) all freely interhybredise

Webers lorrikeet x Rainbow lorrikeets

Black Lori x Rainbow Lorikeets (pope's lori) ( can breed on)

Red Lori x Rainbow Lorikeets (Bishops lori) ( also in lutino mutation) (can breed on )

Not all hybrids are sterile (common misconception).

And no budgie

that is not true my uncle had a grass parrot budgie

and also i don't know if you remember the apparent black face someone had on here once

but it was not a budgie myself and kazzy saw them in the shop before it was posted on here

not a budgie a hybrid

although no one listened to me which i did not really care and if you remember it got sick very young and died i suspect it died as we heard no more about the wondrous black faced budgie

it is not a deliberate act but is passable when flights have veryd parrots as in my uncles case

oh and his was a mule and lived only a year and half looked very much like the black faced bird that was posted which i saw as i said and it was not a budgie although did look very simulure

RIPb, those galahs get around, don't they? Indiscriminate, I'd call it. :D You'd think there would be enough galahs to choose from without going for another species.

Galatiels!

Yeah it is, the pair that produced that bird were living in an aviary, 7 cockatiels and a galah. All the rest of the cockateils were paired up so the last two decided to pair up too. It was a total accident but I heard rumors that the lady sold the pair for $30,000 AUD. No idea if that is legit or not but it's pretty amazing none the less.

A few days ago whilst driving over to Seville Grove to patrol a carpark I saw a small flock of Galahs, one Corella and a Galah/Corrella hybrid. Damn it I didn't have time to stop and take a picture cause I was already running late.

2 year old male.

Was hand reared, has been a bit neglected lately as I haven't had the time, so with a bit of work he'd be tame again.

He speaks a few words, and copies you when you whistle. :) $500 armadale
