What Colour Is This Baby Budgie?

Featured Replies

What colour does this chick look like? I'm guessing a YF Pied Spangle female. She's 13 days old at the moment.

Opinions?

Too early for me to give a good answer but I'd guess it at cinnamon opaline (maybe grey green.....). But really that's a random guess. Would help with a few more days feather growth and knowing what the parents are.

Okay.

Mum is a Cobalt SF Violet Clearflight Pied Spangle Greywing..dad is a Skyblue SF Violet YF2, split for ino and goodness knows what else. Highly likely she is Cinnamon, as she might have had plum eyes when she was a lot younger.

Would help knowing what the parents are :fingerscrossed:

Tail does look spangle, head does look pied, and wing pins do show yellow - whether it is green based or YF blue depends on parentage.

More pictures, if that helps. I'd like to know for sure if she is Cinnamon, Spangle, and/or Opaline. I know she's Pied, that's easy..and so is Yellowface. I'm just not sure about what else she may or may not be.

Has to be yellow face not green. Looks spangle and pied as Dean says. Might be cinnamon, might be opaline too young for me.

Cinnamon chicks you know the day they hatch as their eyes are plum.

Yes, except for the fact I don't really know how to tell the difference, even though I looked at your sticky on it. And I asked here but no one gave a definite answer as to whether her eyes were plum or not, so she could be Cinnamon, or maybe not. But I think she does look it.

Give it a bit more time and we'llbe able to tell from later pics. Sorry to have not been of more help right now.

Eyes are plum so she is cinnamon.

Do the people that post these photoes,

think that some of us have a third eye

& can see what these chicks are going to

be.If you take into account what the parents are,

it gives you arough idear, what they might be.

The only thing that can be for sure is they are Budgies. :fingerscrossed:

Thank you nubbly5 and Kaz. So she is Cinnamon for sure..Any idea at the moment if she is Opaline or Spangle?

Also, is it possible to get some female Lacewings from this male, seeing as he is split for ino and Cinnamon? There is a low chance of crossover of the Cinnamon and Albino, but that would make a Lacewing wouldn't it?

Oh and macka, we (as in me and/or whoever you are reffering to) do not think you (ie, the more experienced breeders here) have a 'third eye' but think, and rightly so, that you's are a lot more experienced and thus can see what the chick is going to be earlier than we can. Because you can, and do. :fingerscrossed:

If it turns out he is split for cinnamon and ino then yes there is a small chance of crossover (only a small percent chance though). It's the cinnamon/ino that is the lacewing not the opaline/ino. So in theory for the male to be lacewing he needs to be Xcin/ino Xcin/ino and at the moment he MAY be Xcin Xino one of these genes nees to cross over onto the same gene strand and then they sort of travel together, acting like a single variety rather than the combination of 2 different varieties. You would then only see the cross over in the first generation if it occurred in a hen chick so you would get Xcin/ino Y.

You are much better off to start with an actual lacewing rather than a split cin split ino if you want reasonable chances of actually getting a visual lacewing.

Alright thanks, I wasn't sure whether or not it was true that I could maybe get a Lacewing from him. Thing is, I really want a Lacewing and haven't seen any that I can buy, so I might as well try and 'make' one. Better chance would be to mate a Cinnamon split ino male to an Albino female or a Cinnamon female, correct? Then all females will be Cinnamon, and half will be Albino and Cinnamon and therefore Lacewing, right?

Spangle babies have two middle tail pin feathers clear..........

your baby has three

I assume it means pied ?

Thanks! One thing I don't understand, is are you able to get a Cinnamon ino that is not visually Lacewing and will not have Lacewing babies, but will have Cinnamon and ino babies, maybe a low percentage of Lacewings (like the Cinnamon and Albino are seperate, not together)..or if the Cinnamon and ino genes are together it is a Lacewing, looks like a Lacewing, and will have Lacewing babies? Or only Lacewings if the bird is Cinnamon and Albino both? (sorry, hope that made sense)

More pictures of the baby..Kaz, you're good at this sort of thing..does she look Spangle or Opaline? I now know she is a YF Pied Cinnamon, thanks to you guys..so should I wait til she is older so you can tell or can you tell now if she is Opaline or not? Surely you can see if she has white down though, on the pictures the colours are as accurate as I can get them. (by using different lighting, not editing the photo)
