4 fertile is one more than last time, and losing one due to all the "non-budgie" drama that was going on in your life at the time is not likely to happen this time, so all looks promising.

Moved the babies out of the breeder cage. Frannie has been bitten by somneone in there....a slight scar across her beak, some bleeding. They are in a kindie cage together now.

One chick only so far to Big Blue and Spice. There may only be one other. Two eggs were pierced, resulting in dead in shell chicks. Others addled. One other showing fertile.

She chose to go to nest the second clutch not being in "breeding condition" so I didnt expect much from this clutch.

Might it be worth fostering her chicks and allowing her a third round of eggs? She hasnt raised many in the first round and you could always foster the next round of eggs out to a more reliable brooding/feeding hen. Depends on how hot it is getting and how feasible it is - giving her a week or two with the chicks may allow her to come back into condition before you swap them out and let her lay a final round for this bout of breeding.

Could do...we will see how she copes. At the moment she is real grumpy. Also I dont have many pairs breeding right now so fosters arent happening.

She's a good Mum. I wonder if her huge ape of a husband Big Blue is the one damaging the eggs as he goes in and out the nestbox.

I tend to blame most egg problems on males - typically because 9/10 in my breeding rooms it IS the males that play kick ball with eggs, try to steal one or two from mum to 'help' her sit on them and puncture them in the process (I have actually watched this happen). Or mum will nip out for a stretch/poop and the cock will run in and do heaven knows what for a minute before the hen comes back.

 

I have a hen who had one last chick in the nest box that was very active exploring and her first two eggs got cracked and eaten, removed the chick (first of this round, no other kindy aged chicks so i had hoped to leave it with the parents if possible) and no further egg problems. She has 6 eggs currently (total 8 laid if you include broken ones).

A very good sized chick Dave. I just tossed out all the other eggs. There were three of Omelette's in there shye laid o0ff the perch ...they were addled. One fertile egg left in the nest. By the time it hatches, if it does I will have to transfer it to another nest due to massive size difference between chicks.
