Posted October 10, 200915 yr Hi, can anyone offer advice or a solution to our problem? It seems Bender has been ripping out his flights feathers. I noticed some blood on the underside of his wing a couple of weeks ago. I checked again today after spotting more blood. I haven't caught him in the act but i'm pretty sure he's taking them out himself. Bender came home with no long tail feathers and no flight feathers, we just assumed it was because he was so young. Is this something he will always do? Will he grow out of it? Any advice is appreciated.
October 10, 200915 yr I seriously doubt he is taking out his own feathers. If he arrived with no tail and you are seeing broken and bleeding flight feathers, then he is a french moult budgie. That means the feathers he is trying to grow through are breaking. He may never have his full flights or tail and he may be destined to become a floor dweller. Time will tell. BUT what you have described is typical of french moult budgies.
October 10, 200915 yr and if kaz is not correct which she usually is then it could be stress boredom or over heated house any of these things will trigger a bird to pull out own feathers sometimes lack of protein they will pull out magor flights to chew up the quill end to try get more protein but if he came totally tail and flight less kaz most prob spot on
October 11, 200915 yr Author Thanks Kaz and Generic, he was on his own when we first got him but we've since put another male in with him to prevent him from being bored. He and Tic Tok have half a dozen toys so I wouldnt think it's boredom. Is there any info on this site re: french moult? Thanks again for sharing
