Best Breeding Options For Clearwing?

Featured Replies

Today I culled out some birds .... at this stage I do it on markings and varieties that I have a surplus of or just do not care for.

This guy was first on my list - As you can see he is a Clearwing but his wing markings are absolutely shocking!

He was one of the first I bred this year out of a Sky Clearwing hen I got from Nubbly and a Normal Cobalt Jeff Lloyd cock bird who happily is split for Dilute.

I was just loading up my birds when my heartstrings began to sing and before I knew it he was back in the aviary. B)

This photo does not do him justice but he has a strong body colour, a decent mask and a lovely blow when he relaxes plus he is shaping up to have a nice long body. I know he has got his Dad's genes and will go on to develop into a nice looking bird ....

So I have made the decision to keep him now but I need to assess the correct future pairings for him-

And this is where all you Clearwing breeders come in!

My options for him are ...

a Dilute hen?

Very clean winged Clearwing hen?

I take it then that he is a clearwing/dilute? If so it would probably be a good idea to pair him with the largest, brightest coloured dilute you can find. I haven't yet begun the process of clearwing breeding - which I will begin once I have graduated and settled into a permanent home. But I have done some ground research for that time and as far as i know breeding with normals will get you SOME improvements in size/mask/feather/length etc but what progress you make there you lose in wing clarity. Alternatively, you can breed with good show size dilutes, but the risk of that is you can get a sort of clearwing/dilute hybrid - somehow the dilute 'dilutes' the clearwing, so even with a clearwing/clearwing bred from a dilute bred clearwing, you may find that the body colour begins to fade.

Its a cruel cruel world!

I can't really say from experience, so I would suggest either breeding him to the clearest clearwing you can find or the brightest dilute.

sorry this is not related to your question which i will leave alone as i do not have the genetics of clear wing down pat yet but

i know you would know he is a clear wing and im sure he has good background history to prove he is clear wing

but to me he looks sky violet grey wing but i absolutely believe he is a clear wing but my sky violet grey wing is spitting image to that

so..... mabe i got me a clear wing :)

clearwings can look like that he is gust a bad bad clearwing sorry renee

Oh don't feel you have to apologize! I know the markings are atrocious, it's the shape of the bird I like! :)

I would go as clear a winged clearwing as you can. You want to add that wing modifier back into the line and try and retain the size and style you gained from the split dilute.
