I was just checking nestboxes, and I got a shock when I saw one of the babies with a red beak  I was investigating it for signs of injury and then noticed all the chicks in that nest had red beaks......it was then that I recalled giving the parents beetroot last night too :P

not something you would give the birds coming up to a show   :D

mine love the beet do you just toss one in whole or do you give pickled ???

i cook and i pickle mine with vinegar

I did that and gee did I get a fright when I saw this hen covered in red. my first reaction was " :fear you so and so :( ' but then I remembered they had beetroot so I apologised with an embarressed look on my face ;)

I cut the full beetroots in half and slide 2 or 3 onto a metal skewer which hooks on the side of the cage's wire and then other end goes over a natural branch perch. I also cut some up into pieces for the birds who prefer to eat off the goround. The bits on the skewers always get hammered and go first.

They look like little toddlers who have just finished an ice cream cone just as cute and equally messy :D

so if i go in a store and buy raw beetroots and give it as i get it will it be fine ???

Hi Shannon... :D

Yep that's what I do.....not the canned stuff, the fresh stuff from the fruit and veg shop, just wash the skin and chop in quarters.......

I also peel mine, just in case there are some nasties on the skin.

okay thank you know i fell i safe to feed to my birds

Just dont feed it just before a show :)

I had been using the tim stuff in their soft feed i never even thought about using the fresh stuff probably because we always buy the tim stuff for ourselves. I guess i'm going shopping tomorrow. Beetroot is one of my birds favourites. :)
